coat hook spacing?

I used a 32" x 8" finished board to create a coat hook base for my entry-area - it was sold as a shelving piece, but I hung it flat against the wall to add coat hooks on. However, I'm not sure how to space the coat hooks, and reading on line shows me all different kinds of spacing recommendations.

I wanted a 4' wide coat rack because it fit the spot nicely, not because I need lots of hooks; most coat racks I saw looked lost on that big wall. So, I want to hang coat hooks spaced for aesthetics as much as for utility.......6" apart? 4"?

I think it depends on what you hang most. Heavy coats, or equipment, etc., lighter

jackets, etc., etc. ? If you put both, I would put the one to be used for the heaviest

or needing the most room at the end. Or if you are only going to put a few light-weight

things there just space them equally. Play with it and see what works for you personally.

Not exactly a robe hook for me, but something I was determined to use for something else but was concerned about the original finish. The original finish was Satin, much like your robe hook (which I love!). No complaints, worked like a charm. Since then I've used Krylon Satin Clear on sooooo many things around the house. Protects the item, easy to apply, almost goof-proof and very inexpensive. And because it's a Satin finish, doesn't make the item shiny or plastic-looking. A Bunny wall plaque. (I can take a pic and post it if you'd like to see how it turned out). It is a smaller, sorta round plaque with lots of detail but because it's a smaller plaque, I wanted to make sure the detail would show. Tried it all lots of walls. Never quite liked where I tried. Don't even remember what sparked the idea but I decided to use the plaque as a trivet for either utensils while I'm cooking or to set my hot tea pot on while I get the cups ready for tea. Made sure the plaque was super-clean and dry. VERY LIGHTLY from about 3 ft. away I sprayed the plaque...VERY LIGHT FIRST COAT. I let it dry for several hours. Second VERY LIGHT coat. Dry. Third light coat. I've had the plaque clear-coated for awhile now and I don't have ANY yellowing, no flaking of the clear coat, no damage of the plaque or clear-coat from the hot tea pot and I've washed the plaque many, many times in the sink with dish soap and a teflon sponge to get dried stuff off that got dripped on it. If they are used very much the microscopically thin brass plating will soon wear off of the plated ones exposing the pot metal underneath. Most plated hardware doesn't look nearly as good as the real thing to start with and the difference grows with age.

Well, you have 7 pieces of tape, not 6. You need 5 spaces between the 6 hooks, plus 2 spaces for clearance at the ends. that gives you 9.6" Now, make it easy on yourself. Make the spacing 9". You'll have 4 extra inches; split it 2" on each end. (7 spaces times 9" = 63" plus 4" = 67") Bring the hooks in 11' from the end of the wall, then every 9" is a hook (alternating upper and lower), and 11" to the end.

I would have put it elsewhere or made it shorter, because I wouldn't want coats hanging over the light switches. Especially not wet ones.

I just looked at our coat rack. It's almost 27" long and the hooks are every 4.5". I think closer together would bug me a bit, seeming a bit cluttered maybe, especially on a longer board. I'd probably be inclined to do 5" or 6" - unless you actually need all the hooks going 4" apart will give you.

The coat hooks in the mudroom that came with the house are 4" in between, The ones I bought from TJ are 6" in between.

I have a coat hook with the hooks 2 1/2" apart and it's way too close. You have a wide space there so I'd opt for 5". Look at a hat and you want to leave enough room for hats to hang comfortably side by side. On my little hook rack, they can't.

Ours is 5" apart. We hang hoodies and windbreaker-type jackets. 6" would've been better.

If you or your visitors wear fur hats, 6” works better.

Just a different idea. I have coat hooks that fold down. You fold down what hooks you need, when you need them. It is sturdy enough to hang heavy winter coats.

I believe you can get them in different lengths, the hight is 2 1/2 inches. You can mount it on your wood and still have plenty of room to see the pretty wood grain.

4" is plenty but you are going to want the screws secured from the back of the board.

Depends. Are you hanging winter puffer coats? Adult sizes or kids? Windbreakers or sweaters or hoodies? Hats? Umbrellas? Tote bags or handbags?

You could even hang a few hooks 6” apart and the rest 4” apart. You have plenty of room.

Maybe you could experiment with Command hooks before you commit?

P.S. Have you considered some smaller hooks on the side over the light switch for keys and such...?

Maybe the problem of having things hanging to cover the light switches could be fixed somewhat by moving the wood piece to the right. Maybe it's the photo angle, it looks uncentered. For me, the wall space to center it on would run be from the far right hand edge of the molding to the wall corner. It seems a few inches too far to the left.

We inherited two such racks with this house, for side and back doors. Five hooks each, spaced 8" apart so 32" of hooks. Works well for hats, coats, backpacks, reusable shopping bags, leashes, umbrellas, etc. Double hooks, like this style:

I'd space the hooks evenly on your rack, and your rack evenly on that wall. If one of the hooks covers the light switch, use it for short stuff only.

Our house has a fairly large cloakroom with hooks spaced 14 inches apart, a bench and a mirror. It is just off of the garage as you enter the kitchen. There are 10 coat hooks in total and two key racks placed above light switches. The spacing is excellent especially in the winter when we have parkas.

Hang shorter items over the light switch and since you said that you don’t really need the hooks, I wouldn’t overcrowd the hooks.

Sunhats need wider spacing, too. 🙂

Thank you for your suggestions - I ended up going with 5.75" because it fit the math equally (the board is actually 48", not 32" (I don't know why I typed that earlier). I went with an open wire style hook, and I am happy with the result.
