In addition to Kimmsr's good points above, it's also possible that you'd be doing your plants harm. That is - sometimes when there's a LOT of one nutrient (an excess) certain other nutrients cannot be easily absorbed by a plant. I don't have examples easily at hand, and have learned about the problem chiefly from reading explanations in this forum. It seems to me that excess potash is one of those nutrients that can cause trouble though.... My sense is, if you want to use highly concentrated stuff (synthetics or specialized organics), you want a soil test - and that can be a great idea when things aren't growing well. But adding organic material (compost and compostables) will also fix a lot of troubles, and is helpful regardless of the soil test feedback.

People say keepIng it simple this year, and I laugh. Keeping it simple is when you garden outside of AZ. Anything here takes a tender hand and a watchful eye. I LOVE hearing about all of these varieties!! This is awesome! I have jalape�os and serranos, lots of swiss chard, romaine, and butter lettuce. I started up another zucchini, and an acorn squash, along with several varieties of cucumber. Oh, and bell peppers of course, from spring plants - those are finally coming into their own, along with about half dozen eggplants. LOTS of eggplants!! Interestingly, my concord grape is fruiting this fall. It already produced this spring, and I didn't realize that it would re-fruit for me now...!

Sounds like your on the right track, with maybe a few oversights? First your garden plot should get at least 5-6 hrs. of sun and some shade from afternoon sun wouldn't hurt. Prepping that plot should be done probably 2-4 weeks before you plant, compost, manure, fertilizer, etc speaking of fertilizer to much nitrogen will cause flowers on tomato and pepper plants to fall off and plants typically become infested with spider mites, aphids, and white flies. Container gardens are ok but I've never liked the results plants become root bound in a hurry and transplanting is necessary if you want a good yield. Plants like honey dew and watermelon need bees to pollinate or you get nothing but a pretty green vine with no fruit, planting flowers like marigolds will help attract bees to your garden. The cool thing about marigolds is that they also put off a scent that will keep a lot of garden pests away, so will plants like basil, garlic, dill, cilantro, and lavender, so plant these between your veggies and your almost guaranteed to have no pests. That means you don't get to eat bug spray yay. But seriously alot of garden problem stem right out of the soil. so test your soil make any adjustments needed and dont forget to reapply fertilizer while there growing nothing to fancy miracle grow has never let me down.
