All these photos are beautiful!! I still haven't figured out how to use the photo gallery on here very well...I searched under "red rooms" but got nothing. ? Have to look into it further. dixiedo - Very nice! I LOVE Swiss Coffee...I have that in my home now. My builder uses BM - "White Atrium" or "Atrium White" (I forget which?!) seems to be the BM equivalent of Swiss Coffee. :) A very nice, warm and cozy white. :) Thank you for your photo! newhomebuilder - Nice! Thank you. I really like your Olive colored dining room as well. Is that a tray ceiling or cathedral in there? Looks great! Love the faux wainscoting! Does look real! I like red rooms....I too think they look very garnished with white but was second-guessing myself with the white faux wainscoting. I think I will go for it now! :) What do you both think I should do about the tray in the ceiling? I think leave it white as I cannot imagine red on the ceiling...might be too much! THANK YOU vcheethi! It is a little hard to see the true creamy yellow and then the other 2 colors. But it really looks great IRL. The adjacent foyer is also the Belgian Waffle--upper color so it all ties together. Here are a couple more pics. We put an extra mirror( from our master bath) behind the glass shelves and then painted the side walls. I have some of my turned bowls in there. I love the reflection. I can also take more pics if it would help anyone. ajsmama: I think the stained wood would look great with the right paint colors. If you either stain another piece of wood to take "shopping" with you or take a piece of your molding that you pop off I bet you can find earthy colors that will really look good. FYI the Olympic Brand piants at Lowes have these great color family folders that I use. I get the paints made in BM but the color family folders are better than any other brand that I have found. What are the other colors in your den? Also since it is a den I think you can get away with a more rustic earthy look. PLease do post colors and wood color etc on another thread so we can all see. I think it would be great fun to see something less formal done in this way. c

We are going to have picture frame wainscoting put in our bathroom, so I've been researching it. Looking at your pictures, I would not do it in your bathroom. You will have major problems with the bullnose corners and especially the curved wall. I can't even imagine doing it. If it were my room, I would paint over the faux painting to give the room consistency, it's too chopped up with only certain walls treated. Especially since there's no clear cut ending to the faux because of all the curved corners. Maybe a nice, long tapestry on the long wall to the left of the toilet. Maybe get someone to paint a mural on the curved wall, since hanging anything on it might be a challenge. Good luck!

An alternative, paired-back approach to create both cohesion and airiness in a space, which is already packed with features, (stepped walls, ceiling angles and heights), is to choose one colour. Subtle interest comes from the play of light, upon those varying angles, ceiling planes and wall faces. Variety comes through contrast in tone, rather than colour. It’s been used with great effect in both historic homes and contemporary apartments. I think it would work beautifully in your space.
