Quartz that looks like Marble... Corian? Granite?
Comments (50)Hey 2LittleFishies, I too love marble, but don't much mind the wear patterns it develops. I've been in houses with 60 year old soap stone and find it quite charming. Heck, I've been in houses with 200 year old marble counters - and still find the wear quite charming. My own Victorian has soapstone around the heat registers. They're a little dinged up but quite beautiful in my opinion. I have a large, cutting board, bit of carrara marble that I use to roll out dough - maybe start with that and see where it takes you. Don't know how old your house is but one of the good things about an older home is that nothing is really perfect and if it is perfect it looks rather out of place. So...things look fine when they are a little worn. I remember going to England and staying in a house that was built in the 1400s - wear just means people have come before you and will come after you, it is a good reminder. So get what you like and what you want. If wear patterns and noticeable age on your counters isn't what you want get something else. Remember, even durable things break, pit and fall apart....See Morecountertop granite quartz vs corian
Comments (10)I am a fabricator. Pick the look you like 1st and then evaluate the different materials. With respect to chipping; either quartz or most granites are very chip resistant if the top corner of the edge is radiused at 3/8" or greater. I believe the vast majority of chipping complaints for either material are due to a sharp top radius. Any of the options you are considering should be durable. I have to disagree with others that assert that granite can't take hot pans. In 18 years I've only had one countertop failure due to heat and that was a lady that had four "lefse" burners set out for a party so the stone was subjected to hot spots for several hours. I move hot pans directly from my stove and oven on to my granite all the time with no ill effects....See MoreCorian Soapstone Quartz - Defective?
Comments (23)Matte quartz of any brand tends to have these issues. The texture traps dirt and oils, unlike a gloss finish. It was a poor idea when it was introduced around 12 years ago, and quickly disappeared from the market due to the lawsuits regarding exactly what you are dealing with. The marketers brought it back because of the current demand for matte finished counters. You can bet the technical team has bloody foreheads from smashing their heads against the wall and screaming that no one will listen to them. In one sense, it's not defective. Because that's the nature of matte quartz. It shows dirt and oils and handprints. That's normal. In another sense, it's defective because, who would choose that as something "normal" to live with. This goes back to your sales person on the job not telling you about what to expect. Because it's performing as expected. And no one would choose it if they were fully informed about how it will act....See MoreHelp! Silestone Charcoal Soapstone Suede Quartz Shower Bench
Comments (3)Have you checked out Corian? I've had better experiences with Corian in the bathroom than quartz. I had a Zodiac Quartz countertop in a barely used bathroom with a gloss finish and I could never remove the water spots. I've had my sister's hair dye sit in on my Corian countertop for a few hours and was able to clean it up with very little effort. My Master Bath shower is all Corian and it is a dream for maintenance. I have yet to come across any thread on Houzz that talks of having problems with Corian...See Moreremodeling1840
