Horizontal stair railing - trendy or timeless?
Comments (50)So my husband is thinking simple vertical looks pretty good after all :-). I'm laughing because I had ordered custom shades from a company that custom colors their own patterns in whatever color you want. I had approved a swatch but when the shades came in, the color was definitely a more blue/green shade than what I had approved. Apparently they decided to match the original fan deck swatch of theirs and not the color I actually approved. I was all set for them to replace it since the color was off. However the store then offered to take off the tax on my whole order (to the tune of almost $600). Between that and the new rug that picked up the same green color, I suddenly loved the new color shades. Funny about that! And I'm the only one who would ever notice the difference....See MoreDeck Railings - are horizontal cables code?
Comments (12)This is the house. Mostly concerned with the look of the railing. (Safety of course is first lol) so I think horizontal cables could be out. We are in Canada too - so from the back deck the view on the fireplace side isn’t as much of a concern as there is a fence (end lot then across road is school yard) but the backyard we plan to put a lot of effort into so don’t want anything too obstructive. Glass is lovely but then there’s the cleaning. It’s drawn here with spindles but if anyone has an opinion I’m all ears! Thanks...See MoreWhat type of stair railing for this space?
Comments (1)Hi Heather. Neither horizontal metal rail or cable rail is an inspection issue as long as the spacing between horizontal members is 4" or less. However, they make great ladders that children may decide to challenge occasionally. A solid barrier such as glass or vertical railing it much less climbable if that is a concern of yours. And there are many styles of railings you could check out then pick what you like be it horizontal or vertical. Best of luck on your project. Comments (5)I like the design in the photo you included with your question. Attaching the posts to the side of the balcony places the posts and other parts outside the balcony footprint, maximizing usable space. The bolts and are not visible from inside the balcony providing a clean look when viewed from within balcony. The bases of the posts in IloveRed's photo are, in contrast, fussy. Attaching the posts to the side may be stronger than attaching them to the top which might require some kind of bracket. -- amateur...See Moredenkyem
