I'm not sure how to follow up. Here is an example of my 'bad' plant design. I found a very nice geranium in the middle of a bed surrounded by taller plants. From spring to fall, you can't see it, unless you are weeding behind plants. Clearly this is poor planning, and bad design. It did not prevent anyone from enjoying the rest of the garden. When I watch people go through a garden, almost all, glide through it - not really seeing individual plants. In fact most go so fast they could not possible appreciate the many problems that exist. Here is another example. Based on my reading, Claude Monet's garden at Giverny would be considered good plant design. I have seen many pictures of the garden - even TV shows, but I think it is a poor example of a garden. I understand the goal was to create a very natural garden and he succeeded very well. But to be honest - the general public would not be impressed with this garden, if they did not know it was famous. A very important part of my original message was "the general public". I am not talking about experienced gardeners, or designers, or students of design. I am talking about Joe public. For the same reason I don't need an expensive wine to enjoy it. I don't need a great symphony to enjoy it. In these areas, I am Joe public. I can enjoy a lower quality of product, because I really do not know the difference. I used to grow Orchids. At our shows, it was interesting to see which Orchids impressed joe public. They knew nothing about real quality in Orchids. Big and colorful wins every time. The Orchidophiles knew better - but only because they have studied the subject and refined their taste. The general public enjoyed the good ones as well as the bad ones. In order to discuss this topic I think it is important to separate one self from your own experiences - difficult to do. Ink you had said " In spite of that do you think you are missing something? Who do you want to impress "the average person" yourself or some other mysterious criterion? ". That is not my point. I see great value in striving for great design, both from a personal level and to impress others. My original point had nothing to do with my feeling, or my ability to see good design, or the ability of people on this forum to do the same. I was talking about the people who don't visit gardening forums.

About 20 years ago we got free tickets to a concert with all of them, including Little Richard and James Brown. It was such an awesome experience, the best concert we've ever been to. Nothing like it! A friend of ours from way back was promoting the concert and gave us tickets....we thank him all the time for that experience!

I'm so sorry!! Nothing like computer issues...anyway, here is the refrigerator roll recipe that I've used for years...the dough keeps pretty well for at least 3 days...it rarely lasts longer than that around here! Refrigerator Rolls In a saucepan, boil 1 cup water, remove from stove and add 1 stick REAL butter (please don't sub) and let it melt. Add: 1/2 cup canola oil 2 eggs 3/4 cup sugar 2 t. salt Let it sit and cool off for a few minutes. In a large bowl, dissolve 2 packages dry yeast in 1 cup warm water...I add a teaspoon or so of sugar to feed the yeast so it will proof a little faster. Add the contents of the saucepan into the yeast mixture and add two cups of bread flour (I use King Arthur's Bread Flour, but have had success with all purpose unbleached). Mix with a hand mixer really well, and add another cup or so of the flour (you will need approximately 6 or so cups in all). At this point, you will need to mix the rest in by hand (will not take long at all) and you only have to knead it until it's smooth and not seriously sticky, but still soft...this is not one of those "knead for half a day" recipes! The dough needs to be soft but not sticky...sorry for the lack of a better explanation! At this point, I put the dough in a large (2 gallon) zip-lock bag and put it in the refrigerator. It will rise nicely and when you are ready, take out what you need and shape into rolls....I do the jelly-roll style in the muffin tins, adding poppy seeds or cheese or whatever you like...even just melted butter..let them rise and they puff up in the middle. Of course you can do Parkerhouse style, bowknots, or any shape you like. Makes 3 or 4 dozen at least, depending on size. Let rise in a warm place, covered with at tea towel and bake at 375 until golden.....accept compliments graciously!

Are you talking about high school? Wow! I wish I'd had classes like that. But don't be so quick to discount the class. One of the most interesting classes I had in college was "American Popular Song," which was basically a chronological history of all kinds of American music, from field chants through rap and heavy metal. I loved that class! I learned a lot about music and continue to be reminded of things I learned. The class was taught by two doctoral candidates who were studying ethnomusicology. They took the class very seriously and made it clear from the beginning that it would not be a Mickey Mouse, easy "A" class. I had to study a lot to earn my grade of 4.0. Personally, I think History of Rock and Roll would be a lot more interesting than Astronomy. :-) And any elective class is a great opportunity for students to expand their knowledge and become more "well rounded." JMO, though. I love to learn.
