lynn2006, thanks for the link. I did find it. I think I've got it narrowed down to a 2x4 in silver sands slate or a quartzite in the golden white or oracle. I think the brick shape is a nice medium between the diamond I have now (and like the shape of) and 4x4 squares I don't care so much for.The store we hoped to buy it at (prices are great) doesn't carry Crossville, and that's where we'll be stopping on our way home from vacation, but I really want to look at the Oracle too so maybe we'll have to make an another trip to the Big City. Mexican white 'field tile" and accent tiles from http://www.finecraftsimports.com/ fine Crafts and Imports out of Camarillo, CA. GREAT company to work with BTW! But if that 10" wall space wasn't there, the inspector wouldn't insist on a receptacle to cover the fixed panel of the sliding glass door, would they? Yes, that is what they make floor boxes for ;) or, I would put it in the side of the cabinet. Many inspectors would also consider the side of the cabinet without doors as wall space. Really? They have reworded that part at least twice that I know of, and it is still confusing to most. The CEU training illustrations all show a low receptacle on the back side of peninsulas, presumably because it is a room divider forming a wall for the dining room (even where there is an overhang for seating, which I would call a bar) Oddly enough, non of the illustrations show a receptacle on the back sides of island cabinets, which I would think is what a fixed, freestanding bar is, but an island is not always a "room divider" between the kitchen and dining or other room. The inspectors do not often include the 2' end of a peninsula (actually more like 20" at the toekick) in that 6' measured along the floor line either because it could be considered part of the kitchen, not a room divider, less than 2', and not part of the dining as is the back side. Essentially, if a blank side (no doors) of a cabinet faces another room, other than the kitchen, then it is counted in the "spaces measured around corners, and unbroken at the floor line", and as a "room divider"... according to most inspectors interpretations I know of.

are the walls and ceiling the same biscuit color? Its some work but I'd pay painters to change all that .....probably before anything else. You have a basic white slab cabinet door / med to darker wood floor so a very light off white /just neutral or gray green undertone so you arent making a statement. the one fixture over the table could perhaps go over the island and getsomething else over the table.or start from scratch and get a pendant or two for the island and coordinating fixture for the table. lighti fixtures and lighter paint will do a lot.... is there a chance of ceiling recessed light plan...in the kitchen? if you tend to the lighting along w the paint project I think youll be pleased what that does....then the tile for the splash/ optional solar shade at the window....shown-lighter wall colors...not stark white...will allow whatever you want w tiles...look at the dining zone compared to your dining spot..same floor..same window size but yours is so much darker due to the medium paint you have.

Wow thank you for all that! I have two pendants and recessed lights going up on Monday. Those have all been purchased.

I needed your input on wall color so thank you. I never know what undertones to go for so the green suggestion really helped. Bonus that green is my favorite color. I’m in New Mexico and all the walls here are textured so I don’t have a ton to work with. And yes, the ceilings are the same color as the walls.

Would bamboo shades look ok in that area?

bamboo is fine..look through bali blinds or levolor web pages the solar shades can still let light in but cut the glare and they have nice textures. bamboo or wicker shades might block out more light not sure. depends on the goal. is it light filtering/privacy/blackout..or???

Well for the sliding glass door it’s for light filter. I live in Albuquerque and it makes watching tv very difficult during the day. Not that I’m complaining about having too much sun.

Yes Andrea, that would be ideal. Unfortunately I don’t have the budget for that at the moment so I’m just going to have to live with it.
