Does anyone Recognize This Plant?

Help! we bought 3 of these last summer and were told they would be perfect for our front planter bed and would be 2-3’ tall and wide. obviously that isnt the case and we think we will need to relocate them due to size unless we can keep them pruned back. We bought them at the farmers market have no idea what they are called. There are two separate varieties. this one has varigated leaves and blooms a small fuschia flower.

The other variety has a larger flat leaf which almost looks like a hydrangea leaf and blooms a small light pink flower. its the one on right of planter.

they lose their leaves in winter . i cut their woody base down to just above soil in March. the growth you see is just since then.

i just need to know what they are so i can tske care of them properly and relocate them to an appropraite location. Thanks for any help!

Yes. They are Weigela cultivars. The first picture shows a variegated one in which plain green growth has out competed the variegated so there is little left. Sadly, by cutting them down in March you have removed the flower buds and ensured they will not bloom for you as they should. They flower in spring and if they are pruned it should be done after flowering.

they have great potential.. and should have never been planted in 2 or 3 foot wide garden bed next t the foundation ... i choose to blame a prior owner.. lol ...

either move them out into the lawn where they can grow properly..

or just get rid of them ...

Astilbe gets my vote as well. I've got lots of it, many different types but they all have that serrated edge on the leaves.

Thank you - My3dogs - I initially looked at the Garden Forums and there were so many I must have missed the Name That Plant - I looked under Identify and then got lazy and came back here. Thank you writersblock for the name. It really brightened the entry to the hospital and I've never seen one before. Since it's tropical it must be similar to when I buy a hibiscus for the summer. It wouldn't make it through Pittsburgh winter so perhaps the landscapers treat it like an annual or dig it up and overwinter it in a greenhouse.

Well i was misinformed by the salesperson who we bought these from as to the size etc. since i prined them back when i shoildnt have will they wver bloom? we did not get the type of bloom , not even close, to what is shown in the photos last year and hardky any this year. so if i were to move them would i prune them back again this fall and then transplant ? or just transplant? if so will they ever bloom fully like the photos? also the only place i can really relocate them to only gets sun from about 1:00-4:00. thanks for your help.

Just transplant any time after they have lost their leaves for winter when the ground is workable. In my climate that could be all through the autumn, winter or early spring. Don’t know about yours.

If they have sufficient space they do not need routine pruning at all. Considering we’re not sure of the precise cultivars, give them at least 6 feet of space. If you do prune, do it as soon as the flowers fade. Fall is too late. However, if you want the variegated one to stay variegated remove any plain green branches that appear. You can do that at any time.
