Rose De Rescht… dead? Any hope?

last year

Planted this gallon container Rose de Rescht in a container, 2 and half weeks later it just turned brown and dead, any ideas in reviving this? Or is this just dead? 💀 😢 🥀

What did you plant it in, and did you feed it after planting?

Thanks for the info harryshoe. I have also had lots of Rose de Rescht suckers from a plant I bought 16 years ago that turned into a 4' x8' colony. It was magnificent but a few years ago voles or some type of root-eating animal chewed up the entire area. Fortunately they didn't eat all the roots but I now have about 20 little plants. I also had deer eat the foliage which didn't help. They are now fenced out and I applied something to discourage the voles so hopefully they will make a comeback. I am also in eastern PA. and would be interested in any of your favorite antique roses.

Christopher, I'm glad you took some precautions with Indigo. She not unmanageable but she's persistent. Rose de Rescht and suckering: My own-root 10-year-old plant slowly sends envoys abroad from the mother ship. It began after 5 or 6 years in the ground. Just a couple a year. A manageable invasion of my small bed. I read that Paul's plants have never suckered and he and I live in similar areas, so that is interesting info. And, no, my Rescht did NOT come from Heirloom unlike some other oddities in my garden. :-) She's been fine for me in full sun and part shade. I've grown her in both over the years. Here in my coastal So. Cal. garden, 'Rose de Rescht' 's leafing out is about par with everything else--neither early or late. I have a 'Rose du Roi' (the original, not the "of commerce") immediately adjacent to a 'Pickering Four Seasons'; and, in light of the theory that Pickering represents a sport of Roi, it's maybe worth pointing out that my Pickering's leafing out is about two weeks ahead of that for Roi. About 'Jacques Cartier' and 'Marquise Boccella', the difference is the height of the plants. The *Magazine of Horticulture* of 1849, as well as Rivers in at least 1846 (keeping track of the differences between Rivers' various editions would be an interesting task!), find the Marquise to be "dwarf"--more so than the likes of 'Baronne Prevost', 'Duchesse de Sutherland', and 'La Reine'--while 'Jacques Cartier', in my experience, always quickly reaches six feet plus. Alice Flores had nursery rows of the short and the tall, and kindly provided me with one of each years ago. I grew them next to each other, under exactly similar conditions, and the height difference remained constant; also, for me, the 'Marquise Boccella' was not as profuse as 'Jacques Cartier', and I eventually got rid of it. With some observation and hard work, commerce could straighten out which of the two is being offered and could present them under their right names. It makes a difference, as I'd definitely recommend 'Jacques Cartier' (the tall one), but am dubious about 'Marquise Boccella' (the short one). 'Rose de Rescht', however, is always good; and the original 'Rose du Roi' is really a magnificent rose. Hurrah for the Damask Perpetuals/Portlands!

Howdy, Mine gets it as well, but not untill a few weeks ago! However, I couldnt depart with this rose as it blooms more than any other in my garden. The only downside to me is that it is a low grower and I have to bend way over to smell the sucker! But Im 6'2 and most of my roses in my climate I have to anyways Silverkelt I remember seeing a picture you posted olga of yours, it looks wonderful. I have a hard time capturing a close up of mine, I can do the bush form of it, but my close ups , it does wierd things to my camera.

where are you. big city name...

you planted it 2 weeks ago.. july in not really bare root planting time in most regions ....

many plants like to be just barely root bound in a pot ... short of a tree. .nothing will ever be such in your huge pot..

one trick might be to use a pot in pot system ...

is there some green at 3 oclock in the pic.. if so.. you might have some small chance it will reflush ...

its incredibly stressed.. fert is not a response to stress.. never.. ever ...

water properly.. put it in full shade if you can move that pot.. and give it until spot.. to see what happens....

nothing releaf inside a few weeks.. so give it some time...

That green looks like some random sprout, not from the rose. I agree it's totally dead, which I'm sorry about, as RdR is a beautiful rose. It's not clear why this happened, 2.5 weeks from all green to this is pretty rapid decline, I wonder what caused it? Hmm.

I'd skip the fertilizer next time. RdR is a wonderful rose. Do try again.

So sorry that happened to your beautiful rose. Heirloom and most sellers advise no granular fertalizer for the first year.

Never add fertilizer to a newly planted rose. If you used commercial potting soil, it already had nutrients added to it, so adding more fertilizer puts you at risk of making the soil toxic with excess nutrient.
