Citrus Plants in Coastal Community - (Southern CA)
Comments (3)It's not the soil, its the amount of heat they get, which is not as much as some of them need to produce tasty fruit. Stay away from grapefruit because they need heat to get sweet. You find them growing in places like Indio, where the long, long hot season sweetens the fruit. A 'Meyer' lemon would be a must have. You can get one on dwarf rootstock. Sadly a current issue in Southern California is the Citrus Greening disease, which is now found here. It may eventually wipe out every citrus tree in So Cal. Just something to be aware of. Also: clay soil is good soil. Its full of nutrients and retains moisture. People may not like it, but plants do....See MoreOak tree sprout transport? Southern CA
Comments (11)i sure have no CA experience.. but my general rule.. is not to move things in august.. maybe its different in CA ... the best time.. in general;. is when night temps fall.. so the transplant has a cooler recovery period at night.. to get over whatever the day threw at them ... if you can shade it in the new spot for a week or 2.. it wouldnt hurt.. since its so small ... just a patio chair or something would be good enough ... when you do the deed ... take the shovel... dig a one shovel full hole in the new location .... then go get the plant.. one shovel full .. and move it.. it never hurts to water in advance.. and after.. to settle the soil ... if you anticipate any resistance in the ground ... like tree roots ... sharpen your shovel first ..... it looks like its growing in an ash pile ... is that just a camera trick?? ken...See Moreorange tree in the ground - help with leaf drop (southern CA)
Comments (2)Thanks for the insight. Water runs out of the rock basin just a few minutes after watering is done. Good point regarding the root area...the right half of the roots get watered by the sprinklers every other day, too, outside of the rock basin. There haven't been any strong winds recently, and the left side, which is losing leaves, is actually close to the side of the house and the side gate. I'm wondering if the sun hits the left differently than the right. After looking at lots of websites about leaf diagnosis, it almost looks like nitrogen deficiency/overwatering, with older leaves gradually turning yellow and then falling off--so that would go along with what you're guessing. I'll guess I'll water once a week....See MoreWhite or black windows for this remodel in Southern CA?
Comments (7)My opinion is that black windows on a White House (autocorrect seems to think I’m talking about the president’s residence) do seem to be everywhere and you will date your house since it is a current trend. However, if it’s a look you like, then maybe it will work for you long term. Your style of windows do not say “farmhouse” to me....See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
