Quartz Countertop Overhang Question

I am at the tail end of a complete kitchen reno. It is a tiny condo kitchen. I had white marble look counters installed Friday. Since the kitchen has not had a final plumbing inspection, I have not been using it. Today, I opened a drawer and noticed it seemed crooked. The countertop is crooked. The drawer is straight. The counter goes from a 2 3/4 inch overhang to a 3/4 inch overhang in 4 feet. The width of the countertop changes by 2 inches in 4 feet. It is something I didn't notice immediately. However, now I can not stop seeing the difference. There are other inconsistencies in this L-shaped counter. If I want this fixed, it means remaking a new countertop and installation. I already paid for the plumber to hook up all the plumbing and will have to pay to have it undone and reinstalled. What do I ask for from the counter company? Money and live with it. I could do that if they give me enough, or do I demand a new counter and money for the plumber? UGH!!!! This reno has been one problem after another.

The thickness of the quartz varies that much? Two inches is a lot. I would immediately call my contractor and ask how he is going to fix the problem.

My mistake I meant depth, not thickness. It is not cut straight it gets wider over the 4 feet. I hope I am making myself clear. Sorry.

If I understand your drawing, that is very similar to what we have. I think our peninsula might be 7 ft instead of 8. Is that the countertop doing the "waterfall" thing at the end of the peninsula? We actually have a cabinet panel supporting that end. There's no plywood or extra quartz under our overhang, which is 12" (and perfectly comfortable for us, contrary to the conventional wisdom.) We don't dance on the counter or anything, but I'm sure it's fine. Our contractor is very experienced and he hired the best countertop guys in the area (independently confirmed by our cabinet guy).

Yeah, one inch in itself is not going to make a huge difference on a deck which is already 4", plus the bathtub edge. It's more to do with the aesthetic of the overhang, I think. Sorry, but what do you mean by "Unless you miter your apron"? The wall below the deck will be subway tiles. The deck could sit on it flush, or extend half an inch or the full inch. Right now, it is being made at 1", but if I don't like it when I see it in place, it can be pushed into the plasterboard a little to decrease the overhang. Sorry, I know this is all very anal. When this reno is over I probably will never think about these details again!

Mark_rachel, its only 12" because there is door to my backyard to the right of it and a wall that juts out behind it that would create a bottleneck if the island is too big. That's the most I can have without blocking traffic. When it was designed I wanted a full two feet behind the sink so my kids could sit there without their stuff falling in the sink. It was decided to put cabinets in the back for a little extra storage without the need for extra support. I would love to have a slightly bigger overhang but I don't have to room and yes, I want the best I can get for my money. If you could have the exact same countertop for $2200 vs. $4500 isn't that the way you would go? I'm bucking at the supports because that is what the back cabinets were put there for, supports are going to get in the way of the doors. Mainenell, that's an interesting idea! It would require adapting the back cabinets though or it would block the doors opening. Weedmeister, thanks for the warning. It is firmly bolted in. My husband built the base on site because this house is old and the floor decidedly unlevel.

I would ask for the countertop to be fixed and for the countertop installer to replace the countertop and pay for the plumber. The overhang should be the same, a specific overhang measurement and edge style would usually be written up in your estimate or specs.

You should get what you paid for. The counter can likely be recut to a consistent 3/4" overhang and they pay for the plumber since you saved them the cost of buying and fabricating a whole new counter.

Which method did they use to template it? They've always done mine with laser and it's very accurate.

Thank you. I will be calling the counter people in the morning. This reno has been a kitchen of mistakes, none on my part, all on the cabinet company. Cabinets and trim missing, extra cabinets delivered that I didn't order. Cabinets had to be re-made in the correct size. I am still waiting for two cabinets that fill the end run next to the fridge. My contractor cut down the wrong-sized ones so he could finish the job. I need the correct ones just for the doors. I waited over three months to get the original cabinet order and have been without a kitchen since the last week of April. I'm tired, and I want my kitchen back. I truly don't understand how they made any money on my order, with the many mistakes they had to correct. I now have a lot of leftover trim and cabinets due to their carelessness.
