I’ve never seen a Japanese Beetle in the flesh but that’s what it looks like to me.

It is very rare for lady bugs to destroy or eat plants as they are predators. Also, Those do not look like lady bugs in the pic. They look closer to the Mexican bean beetle. Being as they are yellow and black, but the puzzling thing is the very geometric looking shapes on their back. I don't think those are lady bugs.

It is a sharpshootet leaf hopper of some kind....maybe the Glassy Wing Sharpshooter. Look that up and see if images compare favorably with yours.

If you can stand it, remove and crush the beetles. They leave a trail for other beetles to visit so you should look in the same places for infestation. You could carry a container with soapy water and place them in that. I've found that the catbirds and other birds eat the beetles I've crushed and left on the ground. The beetles particularly like certain plants. If those plants are grown in afternoon sun, they will attract more beetles than those growing in a shady site in afternoon when beetles are the most active. Roses, azaleas, crape myrtle, Oenothera, Gaura and some Clematis attract them here.

Thanks. It seems like the right bug, although the description I just read puts then the same size as a honey bee and these are smaller. There seem to be about 5 of them and they are 'cutting' everything between the veins of about 3 plants on my porch.

Agreed, Japanese beetle. There are bait traps w/bags that are very effective in reducing their numbers... if the trap is placed about 20-30' away from the plants being protected. During the peak period last year, I was emptying the traps daily, with 100+ beetles per trap.

Agree with the above, and there are probably other critters involved too. Ipomoea leaves usually have at least 2-3 different things munching on them. Check the backs of leaves for caterpillars.

That's an especially pretty one with the so-purple leaves!
