You're gonna run the vent through the kitchen window?

Can you get permission to run the vent thru the wall to outside? Doesn't make sense to do it thru a window when you can just make a hole in the wall.

You have permission. Is there examples using this method you can reference? Because integrating a venting mechanism with a new window installation is likely complicated. And will require a non-standard unit. If other units already have venting you may be able to point to those for design. The window manufacturer will be solving the problem for others as part of the bid. I presume you've got something to install now that was approved for your permission. I'd get your vent setup included in the specs for the new withe new ndows but not pay to have something installed now that'll be replaced at added cost later. You need to talk to the person responsible for the new window bid/quote.

I have seen this done either with a slightly smaller window inserted in the opening with a panel and outlet in the rest of the opening or semi temporarily with the sash dropped down from the top, and a panel with the vent outlet inserted.

There are entire buildings with air conditioning units in the windows of buildings in Manhattan that have been there for decades, and the answer is "No, in a lot of those buildings you can't just make a hole in the wall you have to do it through the window opening". That's just the way it is, for whatever reason.

Look at the bottom left of this photo, among all the AC units is a vent inserted out a window opening:

For the AC units, you can see that they made the glass area of the window or the casement (in this case) smaller to accommodate the window unit.

I cannot make a hole through a wall. When you live in a coop you need permission for everything you do. And while other units have done this in my building I've been trying to get permission since January -- and finally only received it a couple of days ago, even with my pressing week after week.

I haven't purchased my vent yet because I had no clue whether they would have allowed it and what stipulations they would have had me follow. They initially told me no until I pointed out other people already had it done. I found out one of the reasons I'm allowed to vent out is that my kitchen window doesn't face out the main building facade. So I've been putting everything on hold (for months) until I got my permission in writing.

Unfortunately I won't know what the new windows will be -- and it's not guaranteed that it will happen next year (though they are hoping to do it). Our building had been saying they needed to replace the laundry room for years and it finally happened four years after they said they were going to do it (thank goodness I'm lucky enough that my unit was grandfathered into being able to have an in-unit washer/dryer). Dan 1888 (or anybody else who knows more about this), would it be OK to pick out a vent without knowing what our new windows will be?

I'm currently out of town for the weekend. Otherwise I can show you the pictures of how some other people vented out. And, yes, it's similar to the pics provided by palimpset. When I get home I'll post pics of how others vented out.

I would imagine that you are going to be going with a relatively low powered range hood because of course you have no means to provide make-up air. So this means under 400 CFM. I am assuming you are currently gas, although it appears that Manhattan no longer allows gas ranges in new construction or that will be coming up pretty quickly.

What style of window do you have? Casement as above or a double hung window where the top sash slides down and the bottom up?

If you have double hung window this will be the easiest for your situation until you get the new windows. You will either just slide the top sash down and have duct go out through a panel set in the window or you will take the top sash out and replace it with a panel with the vent outlet in it. Of course this means there will be a duct in your kitchen going out the window and it won't be the most esthetic thing.

When you get new windows this window will have to be made to have a panel in it for the duct to go out and also operable window. They probably do this regularly in older buildings like this especially with the AC units. Then you will have to box in the duct going out to make it look better inside the kitchen.

Thank you so much! This is a ridiculous question but can MUA come through the same window the vent is going through? That's probably the only way it could be done as we're not going to be allowed to drill a hole through the exterior wall. And if it turns out that I need a 400 CMF filter, would it even be worth it? I'm assuming yes, as I currently have nothing and my place gets incredibly smoky when I do wok cooking.
