Island Pendant Light Sizing

I need two pendants to hang over my nearly 8 ft. long x 5 ft. wide kitchen island. What is the smallest and largest sizes I should consider? My sink is centered in the island.The kitchen overlooks the great room.

I found some very helpful blogs regarding the recommended size for pendants based on the island dimensions.

You can go with bigger or smaller pendants, difference is in their quantity.

Thanks for keeping up with me Beekeeperswife! I did check out Redroze's kitchen and her pendants are 10" wide and 27" long vs these ones which are 12" wide and 32" long. My DH is worried that they will be too big for both the island and the kitchen. Our island is about a foot shorter than Redroze's but it is about 1 1/2' wider. Also our kitchen is smaller (10'4" by 15 for the working area). If you include the eating area it is 22' x 15. I think I may need to go just slightly smaller. The problem is that I love this particular pendant because it is a little more modern than any of the other lantern style pendants that I have seen.

Thanks, newchapter, I saw those pendants and had to have them (and I had to figure out to cut the budget somewhere else to get them, too! But you gotta splurge once in awhile.) If you want focal points, then my opinion is you also have to consider color in addition to size. A brilliant blue pendant against white cabinets probably does not need to be as large as a stainless pendant. So you might want to blow up a colored balloon to your selected size and hang that.... I didn't try that - I just asked my KD if I could use the pendants I wanted and she said "fine" (her services came as part of the cost of the cabinets, so I used her until my free time ran out!) Good luck - and post pictures when you are done!

do you have a pic or a mock up of your kitchen? 10 foot island w/only two of these? (the island shown here is prob 6X 3.5 , give or take. Here is one over a very small table. your island is prob 3-4 times as long as this? 12" wide? may be too small. you could try adding a 3rd or get larger lights this island would be closer to your size. having only two-12" lights would look paltry this size would be similar to yours. 9' ceilings. island is prob 8-9feet. these are smaller pendants. two wouldn't be enough. 3 is fine. (although, I don't really care for the look of these.) Try looking for the style you like but in a 14-17" size. see if that fits your island. what about these? they come in 3 diff sizes. I think this is the 15" if you only want two, take a look at these Hood pendants. they are a bit larger and come in a wide array of color combos.

My island is 5x8, my 2 pendants are black and approx 15" diameter and maybe 20" tall (10' ceiling)...sorry, not at home to measure right now. What is your ceiling height?

Lucky, my kitchen ceilings are 12 ft. I'm going with two pendants, and I prefer they be a wider diameter. I hope to find some to warm up the kitchen. The 24" tile is soft gray, the perimeter cabinets are white, the island cabinets are soft gray, and the hardware is satin nickel. (The builder's design center had no brass options at the time.)

In the adjacent great room, there is a white sectional, colorful rug (blue, orange, beige, teal, gold) a brushed silver buffet used beneath the tv hanging on the wall, dark coffee (metal) and end tables, and a whitewashed sofa table with orange lamps.

The kitchen is so stark. It needs pendants that make a statement without being flashy.
