Deer and blackberry plants

party_music50
last year

I've grown blackberries for 15 years and the deer have never touched them until this year! They're Apache and very fast growers and they seem to be a nightly salad. Originally they were eating the tips of canes, but now they're stripping every leave of select canes. Is this an ordinary thing?! I've stopped trimming and thinning them because the deer are doing it for me. They're also chomping down on my tall phlox -- but they haven't touched the low-hanging small pears. In the past, the occasional deer would eat my Dark Star hosta at the edge of the lawn, but I lost a large tree tree there in late April and my yard must be more inviting. lol! We had a very wet summer last year and wildlife is strange this year... I'm seeing an unusually large amount of toads and chipmunks, and lots of deer damage. :O)

So really, do your deer eat your blackberry plants like this?
