He's feeling sooooooo much better!!! His pain is non-existent I'd say. I saw him chewing on the corner of the metal door of his carrier this morning. LOL
He did have some diarrhea (tmi, I'm sorry) on Sunday so I called the vet on Monday and they took him off his anti-biotic. Looking back on his other receipts it's the same one that was causing it, when I first took him in back in March for his inflamed and infected gums.
I believe I'll get a replacement tomorrow.
He was on 3 different meds, with different timetables, most with food one didn't matter. Whew that's almost done now.
I haven't heard back regarding his urinary crystals, I'm sure he still has that.
But he's loving and affectionate and EATING BETTER!!
As an experiment I bought a small can of chicken and liver. He hasn't liked anything with feathers before. Even the $3 Turkey Salmon and Duck from the pet store that Bud and Roxie loved. But tonight he ate the chicken and liver, which in the past he's turned his nose up. Progress!
I have a sample of an additive to go in his water but he's not drinking. He was a drinker of water, but he's not now. I put just a bit in (it looks like epsom salts). The technician said to start with a small amount in case he doesn't like it. I'm not sure how to get him drinking water.....this is to help with plaque.
Can you mix a bit of water into his cat food? My sons dog doesn't drink a lot of water and that's what they do and he's quite happy to eat his food with the water mixed in with it.
Re: water in his food. I've been doing that from day one and I still am. He gets liquids that way, easily. Just that the medication is going to be a waste if he doesn't drink it.
He wants his kibble, he keeps going to the cupboard and sitting on the floor where it's kept. I called the vet to see if he's allowed to have any since he doesn't chew it (swallows it whole) but she's afraid it will tear his stitches. His follow-up appt is next Thursday.
I'm looking forward to him actually chewing something; I'll give him a chunk of canned food instead of making it soupy and see what he does. Then we'll try kibble.
If you do get a water fountain, get a small one. I had the big platinum one. He loved it, but it was too much water for only a day and it still has to be cleaned and refilled every day. The filters do nothing for keeping it clean.
Ask your vet about Healthy Mouth. We added that to the boys water bowl for a few years. Gave the water a green tint. I kept a jug mixed up in the fridge for easy use. They never had an issue with it.
I just got back from the vet. I was to pick up some antibiotics, but the vet wanted to talk to me. She's not going to bother with those as it's been almost a week now and he had 5 days of them. He's going in next Thurs for his follow-up so they will check to see if his one pocket is inflamed then.
Urinary......he doesn't have an infection or crystals, or a blockage, but he did have blood (as I knew since that's why I initially took him in shortly after I got him.)
FLUTD----feline lower urinary tract disease. This can be an inflammation or weakening of the bladder where the urine can penetrate the bladder. If he needs it, he can get weekly injections and then monthly to strengthen the bladder lining.
Stress also can cause this, which I remember some of you were mentioning stress when I first brought the issue up. Even though he's in a much calmer and happier environment than he was in, it's still stress-causing. Maybe this will go away on it's own, due to his new environment?
I got some Urinary kibble with a calming additive. He can't have any kibble till after his check-up, so I'll wait till then to give it to him. There's also a canned available which he will be on; they have to order it in.
I was telling her how MUCH better he's doing since the surgery and she was ecstatic. She suggested having a tin of salmon and putting some of the juice in his water to entice him to drink.
I DO put fresh cold water in his bowl. I still have the pitcher of the medicated water in the frig.
I love him. I'm happy to hear you are moving in the right direction and that he is doing better and better. How bright his eyes are!! Thanks for sharing him with us.
I've never seen a cat lay on the edge of the couch or bed before. He sleeps on the very edge of the bed and here he is on the edge of the couch. He was sleeping. He definitely has some idiosyncrasies. 😁 This morning thete was a pen in the hall just outside the bedroom. That was a first! Definitely more playful. And he's taking an interest in my jigsaw puzzle 😮
When my kitties got old and had kidney problems, I got more fluids into them by feeding canned pumpkin; they all have loved it. I started them on it full strength, then when they decided they would eat it, I would add a bit of water to it. Initially, it would be a treat licked off my finger, then they would eat it out of a bowl. Pure pumpkin, not pie filling ;-)
Pumpkin is good for poop, both diarrhea and constipation for dogs and cats. None of my cats would touch it though. I had some frozen in teeny blobs for when they needed it. Ended up by throwing it out.
My vet was big on pumpkin. I fed it to Margaret P. when she was a wee thing and not pooping. I put it in her baby formula but none of the rest of my cats would eat it in any way shape or form. She didnt care. She was a greedy baby. It worked.
I wonder if the sleeping and laying on the edge might not be a sort of survival move. He could easily escape if needed. It's hard to imagine what his former life looked like.
Oh that makes sense murraysmom. I remember trying babyfood squash because my cats seemed to turn up their noses at anything but a freshly opened can of pumpkin. Not after it was refrigerated or frozen, even if brought to room temp or warmed. it got expensive and wasteful.
Murraysmom, good thought. I wonder. He literally sleeps on one side, on the edge of the bed all night. I'm either up against him (because I switch sides every week) or there's a whole lot of bed between us, which he never takes advantage of.
