Windows Design Dilemma Exterior

Exterior window trim, gutter + fascia dilemma

Hi, we just finished our addition + chose black Marvins for the new windows. We replicated the same colors that were on the house, however we feel like the new black windows (upper windows in the pic) are looking ever so slightly off/stark looking with the cream trim + were “considering” changing the trim to a dark grey (possibly SW Iron Ore or something a shade lighter) though we are not sure if that would be a huge home-painting faux pax. We cannot change the cream gutter/eaves or stucco at this point so we’re feeling a bit stuck.

windows: Marvin ebony

trim: BM French Canvas

stucco: BM Night Train

anyone have any thoughts/suggestions for us? As we see it, our options are either:

1. stay as is & let it grow on us

2. have black windows, medium grey trim & creamy eaves, gutter, fascia

I think the issue is that your mulls between the windows are much wider than the trim around the windows.

I had a similar issue in our new build, but since I had a wide lintel above the windows, it balanced the wider mulls. We had to do the wider mulls due to hurricane/impact building codes.

Paint the mulls the same color as the windows so they look like the windows/doors below.

When a poster asks about interior or exterior finishes it's always a help to know and understand all of the other finish choices, since they all have to be harmonious with each other. We still don't know what your exterior wall material and finish will be, and that will have a major effect on the color of gutters and downspouts. If your exterior siding and finish will be some sort of "natural" color, then I think the suggestion above to paint both gutters and downspouts a copper color is a good solution. Ron's suggestion of one color for the gutter, matching the natural stain finish, and a second color for the downspouts, matching the siding finish, is also a good possibility. Black roof, black soffit, black fascia board, black windows: Otherwise the you will loose the lines of your Prairie style roof line if you paint all the color of the house itself.. You're sure on this color?

Well, it's more of a technical question as to whether replacing or painting is the better solution. But we're planning on painting/replacing all forest green and cream elements to a linen white color. It's not stark white (like our windows) but better blends with our taupe siding.

ah - thanks! i hadn’t even thought about the mulls in between as being the issue. Unfortunately our contractor just chose that narrow outside molding for us and before we even realized it, it was up:/

Consider painting the rafter tails to match the trim for a pergola effect under the overhanging upper story.

I would let it grow on you. Your siding, trim, and window color work well with one another but black windows can be quite the visual shock at first. Give it time.
