Travel Insurance recommendations??
Comments (5)I used CSA Travel Insurance a few years ago when we booked a vacation property on the Gulf Coast, worried that the September date was in the midst of hurricane season. Sure enough, Hurricane Isaac hit a week before we were supposed to arrive and badly damaged the property. We had a very good experience with CSA. The communication was great and we received a full refund on the cost of the rental, which was our only pre-paid cost since we were planning to drive there, not fly....See MoreTravel Insurance on a Cruise?
Comments (7)I've never purchased additional health coverage. I have been traveling with a child since she was a wee one, and still not done it. Never thought it necessary, and we have done some crazy adventure driven trips. None of "graze" the buffet all day-type trips. Three squares (gourmet to die for), snacks offered upon return of afternoon activities and hors de'oeuvre at happy hour prior to dinner. One trip I lost 15 lbs over 3 weeks, despite dining like a queen:))). Have you contacted your health insurance carrier? Probably a good idea to see what they have to say. Are you doing one of the large cruiseline trips? Haven't ever done any cruises on the big lines, have only done small ship adventures. The internationals always had a physician on board despite the small number of passengers and staff (approx. 128 total capacity). Trips we've done within/around US borders didn't have a physician on board, but those were also cruises with an even smaller passenger capacity. In the event you are injured, the ship's physician is probably going to be making the call as to where you will receive your medical treatment. I'd inquire from the cruiseline about that as well. What's their plan for injuries sustained requiring medical attention in excess of what the ship's physician can provide. They must have some sort of policy/guidelines for that. If they don't, I'd be surprised and a little worried. Also, while the ship is set to sail at 4, I'd bet that doesn't actually happen until at least 5. We've never sailed at the exact departure time :). I have purchased trip cancellation insurance but only for trips to the OBX. Hurricane season runs through November, and we usually go the week preceding Labor Day (the very height of the season). Have more than once started our vacation on the heels of a direct OBX hurricane hit. I've never had to use the insurance. Are you heading to Mexico?...See MoreAnyone used travel insurance before?
Comments (15)We have an annual family plan that we purchase through our credit card provider (Canadian). It ends up costing less than a per trip purchase and you don't have the problem of having X days to buy the insurance after booking your trip (after all, you can't book hotels until you have your flights etc. - gets very convoluted). But I do know of one small travel agency that on a weekly basis had many customers trying to get refunds for trips on which they had declined travel insurance - but say broke an ankle the day before leaving (changing a light bulb), had a death in the family etc. - but it was too late. I do get annoyed though that the travel insurance does not cover incidents caused by strikes - say you can't make it to the airport because of a labour disruption - they won't pay. Or for Acts of God....See MoreDo you buy travel insurance?
Comments (31)I've been checking weather reports for the South Pacific, and it looks like we will have decent weather for our trip. That was my main concern regarding insurance. We will not be doing anything risky that I think we would need insurance for, and so I think I will forego it this time, but I will still consider it for the future.\ As for bags not arriving, since we have a non-stop flight, I don't think there is much chance that they would get lost. I try to get non-stop flights whenever possible for this reason, but that was not possible when we went to Brazil, and nothing bad happened. I had not been told about trip/travel insurance before we went, and as it turned out, we did not need it. We also had non-stop flights to Rome when we went to Italy, but I would have been concerned if we had had to change planes in Paris or London. This information has been very helpful to me, and I will remember it for future trips....See Morecaflowerluver
