What do I need to really know about the LaCanche
Comments (34)I thought about getting a wall oven in addition to my two Cluny ovens and warming cupboard. When we were building out house, I was worried that I wouldn't have enough space with just the Cluny ovens; which are smaller than the Sully ovens. I ended up not doing the wall oven, because I wasn't sure which one I wanted and I became overwhelmed with out decisions related to building a house. Over five years later, the space I left for the wall oven, still holds my microwave and I have no intention of buying another oven in my kitchen. I easily feed my entire family of six and host large parties with the Cluny 1400. I can't speak for everyone, but like me, I believe many people are use to large American sized ovens and worry about downsizing to something smaller. What I've learned is that my old American sized oven was never very practical, I could only cook things at the same temperature and most of the time I was heating up the entire oven space for something like a casserole dish. And for larger events, the oven was mostly taken up with something like a turkey making it almost impossible to cooks sides on the same day....See MoreWhat do you hate about our plans?
Comments (49)We are more than considering, we are probably throwing out the original plans all together and rolling with what has been drawn up from this site. It has been a whirlwind of a day since we have been staring at these plans for over a year but I can totally see the benefit. I would like a little more bathroom space for my girls room in bedroom 2 but I think it is doable. We are actually building about 30 min. east of Muncie a couple miles from the Ohio line. Small world! The house will be all brick and my father-in-law is a bricklayer who will be doing the job. We worked with a lumber yard who drew up all the plans and passed them on to the builder so they were the ones who drew up the elevations. We are open for all ideas! I don't think we will be able to make the turn to have a side loading garage but it is worth exploring and seeing how many trees we would have to lose. Now the drive curves toward the pond and back around to the clearing for the house. We would have to clear out a large area of trees to be able to even come close to having a side load and it would be tight. We appreciate all the time that is being spent for complete strangers!...See MoreWhat to do?DH and I need to decide on our style in about 15 mins.
Comments (22)lynnski, you've given me a great idea. Our kitchen, dining area, and LR are essentially one big room except for the pantry wall that separates the kitchen from the LR. If you look at the third pic from the top you'll see a little bookcase built into my cabs where I keep cookbooks. This end of the cabs faces, and is only a few feet from, the dining area. I've thought those cookbooks don't look right; DH says they look "junky." Anyway, I put the biggest Chinese horse in there all by himself, with the blue Chinese box you see in the cookbook photo underneath him, with only one very low shelf. He looks great, and carries on the living room feeling into the dining area. Only questions I have are that there's not much contrast between him and the oak bookcase, and also it might look a little stark. I'll post a pic on a new thread when I can get one. I'm thinking the cookbooks (I keep them neatly) will transfer their "junkiness" to the top of the cabs if I put them there, and they're also not tall enough. Don't think we can afford to put an extra row of cabs up there though. Thanks for your ideas. The Chinese horse looks very much at home. summiebee, you're right about the view. I wanted the house to have as little demarcation between the inside and outside as possible, with a glass wall. Didn't turn out that way -- builder convinced us that with our high winds we'd never be comfortable -- but he also put the windows higher than we wanted, and one expense we're going to undertake is to find a way to make the view windows bigger. They're 8x5 now, but we're going to put in non-operating glass doors or something instead. Thanks again, all....See MorePlease look at our kitchen plan, I'm not sure about it...
Comments (22)As LL did, I'd keep the sink and DW on the top wall (does the window overlook the garage?), with the fridge between the DW and kitchen table area. Can you move the DR door down? That might leave enough space for the cooktop and ovens on the short wall. Then if you can move the bathroom door down, and cut the corner on a diagonal, you could still have a more open kitchen: You would also keep most of the traffic out of the work area. ETA, if you also move the PR as you suggested, you can have a wider work aisle:...See More
