advice needed on kitchen table and rug under it

Hi there, Looking for a new kitchen table and a kitchen rug and welcome your suggestions! The photos are my current table and chairs (keeping chairs - just looking for a new table) and my island which the table is next to. I love the west elm table (see below) but I think it’s too light with my kitchen cabinets? I also like both of crate and barrel tables, but also worried they are too light? Would welcome any opinions on this, thanks! Any other suggestions for a table or rug? Links deeply appreciated! Thanks so much for your help!

Looks like you are heading a bit towards MCM, given your chairs, chandelier and now table choice. I think the problem is trying to tie in your traditional kitchen and your family room (vs just considering wood tone). Also suggest holding off on rug until table is selected. Are you open to round in a style that might better blend in with the three areas?

the style is functional at our house on this topic. I have a cold kitchen floor and the same in the dining room which is part of the kitchen. We have castor chairs at the table and to roll up to the table, I put an office carpet in gray with the rubber backing which is easy to rollup on off without budging the rug. This is a busy house with 3 sloppy kids and it has seen plenty of abuse and shows nothing. In my cold kitchen I got a $10 indoor- outdoor carpet in gray from menards when they go on sale, and put it down with dbl stick tape. It covers all but about a foot around the edges. This room has a lot of traffic. The tape was a must. The whole family appreciates it even the cats, and the only thing it shows is when my dtr dumped an entire lemon merienge pie upside down on it- and if I'd get my rug shampooer over to this house I'd have that gone. If not $10 and I have a new one!

I have three kids so am very familiar with the issues with placing a rug under the kitchen table. We also had remodeled our kitchen and added new hardwood floors so understand your concerns there as well. I was a hold out for a long time, but finally put one there last year. I did not purchase a rug, however, but moved one there that I already owned that I had in the family room when I purchased a different rug for that room. The rug that went under the kitchen table is a very inexpensive synthetic rug that cost me around $60. So far, it has held up well and when it gets too stained or latex backing starts to emit a smell (as can happen with inexpensive rugs), I will replace it. As it's a fairly dark rug with a busy pattern it does not show the dirt. Added pluses are that the chairs do not scratch my hardwood floors. Even with the little felt pads on the legs, sometimes they would come off or the start picking up all the mess and dust on the floor--though I still keep felt pads on the legs since the chairs are moved sometimes when guests visit. Shee, is correct about the sizing of the rug--conservative measurements would be to allow about 3' extra around all sides beyond the table size. In my case that was not possible due to space limitations and I've gotten by with a lot less. Previous to this I had my kitchen table on wall-to-wall carpeting and it would get so stained, dirty (and I feared smelly as well). When I first changed to hardwood, having an easy to clean floor was very important; not sure whether my kids are older (youngest is now 9) or that this is an dark, patterned area rug, but there is no comparision between the two. I still would never, never, want a kitchen table on wall-to-wall carpeting. My kids are still not THAT neat! It gets dirty, but I wash regularly and keep a vinyl tablecloth below so if the kids want to do something messy, we just pull off the cloth one and use the vinyl.

Photos would help because we don't know how much space is around the table. Is the table oval? Round? You want to make sure the rug is large enough to pull the chairs out when you go to sit down. Also it's helpful to use painters tape to do a mock up on the floor of the rug size.

You need a solid rug with all that pattern. Pull a color from the chairs, probably the lightest one, and go there.

Thanks for this. I am not opposed to round - Except that it would mean I would need to try to get a fifth matching chair. I bought these chairs at HomeGoods so I’m not sure that that’s possible, and I love the chairs so buying five new chairs wouldn’t be an option. Is there a rectangular or square table he might recommend that would be good for this blend?

Picture shows five, but if you like idea of a round, 4 chairs with the right sized table is an option. Can take a picture of a chair, as seeing in more detail may be helpful. In an open concept, changing a major piece can be difficult. I’m stumped and hope you get some helpful suggestions.

You can have 4 chairs no problem I do agree you need to be awre of the big sylre differences in those 2 spaces. IMO at lest change the backsplash to something less Tuscan looking if going with either of those tables and the chairs you have . Please change the lighting to LED 4000k everywhere you have areal yellow cast to what you have now . As for the color of those tables either works I love the chairs hate the stools I think you need tofigure out what style direction you are going into.

If you're shopping locally, I suggest you lug one of your chairs to the store and try it at the table, or make sure the table is returnable. The "fork to mouth" distance has to be taken into account. If chairs cannot be pulled to the table adequately, it will not be comfortable for dining. Guests sould not have to sit on the edge of their seats in order to consume food. Once you've decided on a table, you'll want a rug that is 36-42" larger than the table top all around. Since your chairs have splayed legs on the back, I'd go for the larger size. You don't want the chairs to fall off the rug when pulled out and sat in.

I agree with the suggestion of looking for a round table. Have you looked at Arhaus Furniture?

Hi there, I love Arhaus but right now out of my budget - looking at tables that are under $1500. I also won’t be able to do a major project like the backsplash. So I think the idea of a table that might blend the styles - or bridge the styles is a good one. Now to find one…any suggestions are welcome 😀

My friend just purchased it and paired it with chairs that lean modern in an otherwise traditional kitchen. It pulled everything together beautifully. The smaller size works well with four chairs.
