Flowering wood plants Maine

This bed runs the length of our house but I’m only showing the part that is at the front of our entry. This area is not only woodsy, but everything I try to plant doesnt flourish. Plants in the photo are a few years old and arent much bigger than when they were planted. Never mind that we have a deer problem, and maybe voles. any suggestions on what might do well here, as well as bring some color?

we are in zone 6, southern Maine. Thank you!

I suggest adding the Perennials and Shrubs forums to your posting. They get much more traffic than the two you’ve tagged.

What's "a few years?" It's normal for plants to take a year or two to settle in before growing. I've had good luck with violets. They grow everywhere, even in dry shade. You can do Heuchera. I've put in some foam flower. My hostas grow everywhere. Impatiens is an annual, but it should do well there.

We have a major problem with them along the trim over our back porch. And now they're drilling holes in the cedar overhangs of my chicken coop. They really frustrate me. But I've been reading that they are great pollinators, and considering that we're losing alot of our honey bees, I think I'll try to mildly discourage them (in natural ways), and just replace the badly damaged pieces of wood eventually. They don't make holes straight through into your house, but turn at a 90 degree angle, once they are 1/4" into the wood, and make their chambers. One reason I don't want to make it impossible for them to continue to drill holes in the back porch area, is that I know they will go elsewhere on the house, where it would be much harder to get to to replace the wood. The males don't have stingers, only the females do.......but it's hard to tell them apart. Good luck, but try to balance things in your mind, as to your approach. I think they do alot of good, and so I'm going to tolerate them for the most part. But I do have a discussion with them everytime I have to deal with them, and ask them to please use a tree or old fencepost instead. :)

I didnt find Rozanne, and the supplier I checked out was out of it. But I will keep an eye out for it as My cranesbill dont sprawl just mound up and fall, cut them back and let them try it again. This Rozanne has me wanting to see it! :) Pansies and johnny jump ups are high maintenance until I decided to save the seeds! Then it was more fun to deadhead. I too, love them all the same. I threw out some old seed at the end of July for cut and come again zinnias last year and they bloomed that fall and held on to the hard frost.

One drought tolerant plant with tons of varieties is sedum. It can be had in various heights and bloom times and colors. I'm not a fan of the commonly found Autumn Joy, think it's overrated, but a good nursery will have a number of different ones to choose from. They require very little care and can be used in pots or in the ground. Just one suggestion. I'm sure more will be along. Sandy

Hi Lolanctot, Did your plants grow better this Summer? If not, consider the following possibilities:

- insufficient water due to competition

- not enough sun

- poor soil

Also, which plants are under performing? Do I see Azaleas? They are very slow growers. what else is planted there?
