No, I have not measured it. You can't plan with plants that precisely anyway, you could get quite a different response from different stock on a different site in a different climate. Height expectations given by other sources are always only representative. Unlike other shrubs bamboos do have a maximum potential height that is not exceeded, on those occasions when it is reached.

I think all i have left as far as bamboos is 1 very small fargesia rufa, and 3 phyllostachys parvifolia whip shoots which might all fit into a medium flat rate box. parvifolia is however a more aggressive grower than most of other running types I grow in the ground, but it's not a rampant runner like the aureosulcatas, bissetiis, or rubromarginata. Some of my other runners would take a few months for me to get a viable division, perhaps through airlayering a shoot bud into a nursery pot. I don't mind sending a box of plants as long as you pay for the shipping and $3 for gas, but I don't have of a large variety at this point in time. I also have some neighbors with claims already on the next division that some of my bamboos produce. It is possible to mow around and step on shoots to control them if you have lots of space, but the rhizomes will still keep advancing a bit farther each year and it is possible for shoots to pop up over 10ft away from the main plant. Thinning out culms will tend to discourage this type of behavior, and using a shovel to dig a round the circumference of the grove right after shooting season will kill off and rot all the unwanted rhizomes that don't have any attachment to a culm because their starches will be depleted right after new shoots are done branching out, but not leafed out yet. I still haven't had to do any form of containment, but I'm in an even colder climate than you, and bamboos require warm soil temperatures to spread well.

Is there a reason you have it in a pot? Growing any plant or tree or grass in a container is nothing at all like growing something in the ground. It is a totally different kind of gardening. You should be posting on Container Forum also. Your clumping bamboo doesn't like a pot. It wants soil so that it can spread out and be comfortable. It won't take off on you and eat your yard. It jsut slowly spreads by getting wider. When you repot the bamboo, which you should do now, in a nice wide pot, you have to water it almost every day. It can't search for water, you have it in a container. When the container dries out, so does your bamboo. If you place it in full sun, that is fine, but you must water it if it doesn't rain. It is a grass. You have to plant it in quality soil, which if you go to the container forum, they will advise you as to what to plant it in. The pot must drain for bamboo, they hate wet feet. Fertizile your bamboo with grass cuttings when you mow the lawn, and in the spring give it Lawn food. If I were you, I would put it in the ground. Don't worry, you have the non invasive type, at least for now. LOL. (only kidding) No barrier required. GOod Luck to you!

Just to update this old thread, a couple of culms died on the transplanted section and the remainder of the culms look a bit stressed and lost a lot of leaves over the winter compared to the ones I left in place but maybe because of the mild winter (lowest all winter was about 17 degrees), the remaining culms are all still alive and a couple of new shoots are already poking out of the soil! The half of the clump that I didn't move looks better, and has several shoots just beginning to emerge. I've always been surprised by how early this species shoots.
