Porch Design Help
Comments (0)Hello everyone, Thank you for your consideration. I'm interested in having a porch built on the front of my house and would like some suggestions with designing a porch that will fit the architecture of the house and enhance the curb appeal. The front entrance of my house, (in my opinion) looks like there is something missing and a porch should have been built by the original builder. (see attached drawing of house) The porch size should be aprox 13' wide x 7' deep and enclose the brick area on the front of the house, keeping in mind the offset position of the front door. The entire front of the house is on a single plain and there's a cement stoop with one step up from the walkway and one step up to the threshold. Any help, suggestions, or drawings is greatly appreciated. Comments (10)In your introductory statement, you say that you're interested in changing "... the front deck into a more pleasant entry way." Let's compare the existing deck to two concepts. Presently, it seems sized such that it could accommodate 3 or 4 people entering. In my concept I haven't the size of the deck much. I've widened it just a little, mainly to allow for building wider steps ... maybe twice as wide as the current steps. It might accommodate an additional person or two. In your concept drawing, you've changed the deck from merely an entrance, to one sized for family gatherings -- lounging, dining, BBQs, etc. Is that how you intend to use the deck? If it is merely an entrance, it does not make sense to overwhelm the space with a lounging and entertaining deck sized for a family ... unless you are receiving visitors in groups numbering into the teens. First, figure out its purpose and base its size on that. Then work out its configuration. Whether its a wood deck or masonry porch structure doesn't matter to its function, as either can do the job. The materials will have more to do with durability, maintenance and the visual, artistic impression that you are trying to make. In general, I think people value masonry porches as the superior ones, b ut it isn't necessarily always that way....See MoreFront entrance "curb appeal"
Comments (10)Add your barn/garage to your drawing of your property and an "x" beside the doors you do not want your visitors to use to enter. Add your screened porch to the drawing of the house. Add an arrow pointing to the door you do want visitors to use. You have invested a lot in building decks ... add them with a dotted line. The term "curb" appeal usually refers to the view of the home from the road. You seem to want to know how to make your actual entrance obvious. If that is your question, the answer is obvious. Remove the boardwalk/sidewalk that leads to the corner between the screened porch and your intended entry door and create a concrete a new sidewalk from your driveway leading only to your front entrance. Outline all the "yard" - except at the path you want visitors to use -- with a low growing plant (such as liriope iof it will grow where yo are) to "block" any other path. Or just put a "use other door" sign with an arrow on your screened porch door. visitors keep trying to use...See MorePls some responses...entrance & curb appeal?
Comments (3)Be sure to consider your brick as a color in this plan. More than two colors on the front of this house may be overkill. Keeping it simple will have more of an impact. I think the landscaping needs a lot of attention (I'm not good in that area, so we'll have to wait for others on that issue). What is the purpose of having the walkway go straight from the house to the road? That chops up the front lawn. I would have a walkway going from the driveway to the front door and hugging the house....See Moremikkibookmite
