Wall trimming help please!!!

We’d like some help for our wall trimming please!! Causing many sleepless nights :((( wanting a modern touch that doesn’t make the room look smaller, and if it helps make the room look bigger, then even better!

We have some thoughts but wanted some guidance before committing our whole house to it (OMG!)

We have 10’ ceilings, 7” baseboards, 6” crown moulding throughout. Planning on painting trim same white as walls.

Option 1: 1/4 lower box, possible line in between, 3/4 box above (or would people recommend 1/3 and 2/3 ratio)? See photos 1-4.

Option 2: one big box that spans the height of the wall almost (approx 7 foot box). See photos 5-6.

Option 3: three lines that goes across every room and hallway in the bottom 1/3 of the walls, then in the upper 2/3 is one big box. See photos 7-10.

The panelizing of the walls should be carefully thought out during the design process. How far are you into the design process?

Were just starting!! we have floorplan done as well as flooring, kitchen and bathrooms. were coming to the end doing the wall trim! any thoughts?

I use gold everywhere :) It's lovely. I like Ralph Lauren Startched Apron with gold tones. Do not trust the paint sample for the color though. Pick up a pint and give it a try...it's absolutely fabulous with any earth tone color and most deeper colors...I just don't like it with ice blues. I have used it in gad...four homes now LOL no make that five, many of my ceilings here are also Startched apron.

Just to follow up, Kilim Beige on the walls with Alabaster trim/ceiling looks great in the new house! I love the colors with the dark walnut doors/cabinets and bronze fixtures. They just hooked up electrical so it looks nice with artificial light as well. Sometimes I regret not looking into SW Pavilion Beige, but I don't know why I do that to myself...what's done is done and I should be so relieved that Kilim Beige looks great! When they first painted I thought I saw peach undertones and I panicked. But I did not see that again. It is definitely warm, but I can't detect any real undertones. Flooring isn't in yet, so I'm curious to see how the color will change. patty_cakes, you wrote in a previous post above: "As for the color/colors, just a very pleasant, warm tan that has a beautiful candlelight hue in the evening. Good luck. ;o)" I thought of your comment when we saw the house for the first time last night with artificial light...kilim beige does have that beautiful candlelight hue in the evening! I would love to see pictures also as i have White Dove kitchen Cabinets and was looking at using Winds Breath for all the walls in the house and White Dove for all the doors and trim,in pearl finish . My floors through out the house will be Ambiance’s Hickory Silver Mint which is a hand scraped Hickory greige, very warm. I sometimes see mauve in the floor and if the Winds Breath can lean towards a pink hue will this bring the mauve out of the floor or will the floor bring the pink out of the walls. The kit hen, dining and living room face south so very bright with natural light. All out lights are 4000K. Would appreciate any help. Thank you

You should not worry too much about resale that is 5 years off. Trends change very quickly and what works for one house can look odd in another. I do not think your doors and cabinets are oak. That is not the usual look of oak - someone with better experience with wood will be able to tell you more. Warm wood tones are returning, so you can just leave the trim and paint walls in a pretty neutral. Creams, sage greens, green grays and whites tend to work better than cool grays with warm wood tones. A white with a gray undertone or greige may also work, but the greige would probably over do the brown tones in the space. If you can afford it, a natural or lightly stained oak solid hardwood floor would look good and fitting in the space. That is a more traditional floor, but since it is in homes over a hundred years old and still used today, it would be timeless rather than trendy and flexible to style changes. Your trim looks to me that it might be pine. I did paint my dark stained pine trim, but did not paint my cabinets and interior paneled doors. Wood interior paneled doors have more value than white, which are usually MDF. Wood moves with changes in temp and humidity which can cause hairline cracks in the paint at the joints. For this reason most factory painted cabinets are MDF or a wood and MDF comb. Wood doors are also much easier to care for than white. A painted over previously finished surface also does not have the durability of a factory painted finish - though paint can extend the life of worn cabinets. IMO picture frame molding on walls is very Traditional and NOT Modern.

Batten strips mounted on the walls horizontally are a modern take on the traditional picture framemolding.

For "modern" skip the trim and invest in stunning modern art.

None of the photos you show say "modern" to me and some of them loudly scream "hotel/apartment hallway" and "hotel suite".

If you do decide you want the moldings, then I would not do this on every wall like a hotel. Also think very carefully about having the molding and placing art within them.

Don't commit your whole house to one type of trim. Trim selection should take into account the function of the room, the overall style of the house, budget, and a host of other factors.

Personally, my greatest objection to wall moulding or panelization of wall is that it inhibits the flexible display of wall art.

My first wife is an artist. In the house we owned we installed, in most every room, picture rail moulding to hang art from. The art changes monthly and sometimes daily, and the walls were saved from the need of patching nail holes.

The wall moulding gives an interesting look, but I favor art.

The Modern aesthetic is about the lack of ornamentation, not the addition of it. The removal of ornamentation, not the adding of it. Zero base and crown, not large moldings. The overly fussy panel molding shown in those pics has a lot in common with the 70’s ”Mediterranean” look that was a riff on the 30’s Hollywood Regency that was in turn inspired by the original of them all, the genuine LouisXIV creation of Versailles. That type of design is all about excess, not restraint.

Perhaps you need to rethink your design style influences, or your verbiage in expressing them. If you want a layered and visually complex home, a Victorian type of sensibility in creating it may come closer to the verbal description. But that involved actual mahogany wood paneling of the spaces, real marble floors, and lots of other luxurious authentic finishes from exotic locations that colonialism brought back to the empire.

Your architrct should have a good grounding in historical design styles. What type of trimwork are they suggesting to go with the overall style of the home? Is the home itself Modern? Because the interior and exterior should belong to each other, and be a holistic creation.
