Can I drill into these wrought iron columns?

I want to put an American flag up. Do you think I can drill into this wrought iron column to mount it? If so, what should I use? My husband doesn’t think I can. Thanks!

You sure can.

My DH rescued columns like this from a house being remodeled, one still had the old flag holder attached. We used them for a potting bench and left it. :)

You can drill into the square tubing. This really isn't wrought iron. The tubing is hollow. Need to use sheet metal screws.

Might want to cut a board that spans from side to side; anchor the board with sheet metal screws. Paint to match. And attach the flag holder to the board.

Hello All! We have a 1936 Dutch Colonial with the original bathroom. The bathroom tile is less than great shape but the original tub and pedestal sink are in good shape and quite charming. The problem I have is with the tub. The last owner installed shower doors on top of the side. Unfortunately, they twice drilled through the porcelain and through the iron to secure the door. We removed the doors and now we have two holes, about the width of a pencil that are in a very visible place. I have temporarily filled the holes with caulk to keep water from getting in the holes and possibly rusting the tub from the inside out. What is anything can be done to properly repair the holes? Thanks in advance for your advice

The local rental yard should have the coring drill and core bits to easily remove the old section, and bore a new hole for a new one. The surface anchors are a very weak method for attaching railings. You have at least a 30 inch steel lever to rip the anchors out of the concrete with.

Those are cool! I don't see the broken part - is there any way you can still use them as a chair/stool? It seems you can attach a piece of plywood, cover the plywood with foam and fabric..... or how about one of them holding a basin for a bird bath and have some flowering vine go up the legs.... or the back would make a nice window grille or solder some brackets to the back (assuming you can separate it from the rest of the chair) and have a nice shelf. I'll have to think on this - nice find!

You will need to plan to water frequently. Generally where are you located such as nearest large city and state or country? What is happy as a potted plant in NH might not be the same as TX. What is the light level like over the course of the day? It looks quite shaded from this photo. Have you considered pots with vines such as clematis or mandevilla vine growing up the wrought iron columns, or are you firm on wanting hanging plants?

I used U bolts to attach my flag bracket. i have the same columns.

A screw hole won't bother the tubing, however Jinx's recycled piece (which is pretty darn cool BTW) illustrates how the bracket will sit very proud of the width of the tube. It would be better, and IMO a better location anyway, to mount it to the brick wall to the right of the stoop. Locate the screw in the mortar joint.

Locating the screw in the brick face, rather than the mortar, and using the proper size plastic insert will provide a more secure attachment.

Put it in the brick, away from the high traffic path. It’s is a better location for many reasons.
