Paint Home Decorating Design Dilemma

Dark sunroom paint color?

Having trouble picking out a wall color for our sunroom that we’re re-doing (will be getting new furniture, etc). I originally wanted a sage/dark green and had Behrs “Bonsai Pot” in mind but I’m worried it might be too dark paired with the dark floors??

The sunroom is off of our kitchen that has white cabinets and off-white walls. The room itself gets a decent amout of natural light.

Would bonsai pot be too dark given the floors, or is there enough natural light here to go with a darker color on the walls?

Any advice is helpful!!

I think we may have the same floors! I just finished an addition and we used a color called Toasty Gray. It's has a little bit of a greenish cast and looks nice with the floors.

jane ny, I was in a similar situation last year. For me the sequence was paint first, then flooring, then baseboards, But it looks like you may have baseboards already installed. Painting first worked for me because I did it myself and there were spatters on the subloor before I was finished. You might want to check on whether your subfloor is indeed covered with plywood, because you may need an underlayment before installing your floor, depending on what you choose. Best to check where you buy the flooring. With some help from a friend who knew what he was doing and owns a Skill Saw, I installed a plywood underlayment in less than two hours. I too wanted tile with a slate or similar look, but the room was already over budget (long story) and I chose to spend my money on high end French doors because the floor could always be changed later. I got some advice from the flooring forum while deciding. You can always post a message there before you proceed. We narrowed floor choices down to either loose-laid sheet vinyl or vinyl tiles. My friend chose the tiles because the color and pattern seemed to fit well in the sunroom/porch. The original intention was to keep those tiles for about a year while I shop for tile and find a good tile installer. Love it! Thousand Oceans seems to have a fair bit of green in it which I like, specially because Gray Owl as mentioned looks positively minty in my living room (two double windows on either side with north east and south west exposures). The other options - Coastline, Polaris, Van Courtland, Van Deusen etc are very much blue/grays.

Our floors were open to ground also. We had foam sprayed in from the underside. In some places, where it was a tall enough crawl, we had pink stuff, foil covered foam installed under the floor joists, taped and touch in foamed along edges. We did get occasional leakage between boards, once peeled out, ya don't even notice.

I disagree IMO that color will be quite dark and can we see the new furniture or is that it? IMO you choose wall colr to work with the furniture not just the floors. Have you done a big poster board with that color and moved it around at different times of the day to see what it looks like, I like yellow/ greens but sometimes they border on baby puke . I aslo would suggest much better lighting and all LED 4000K in a sunroom.

It’s impossible to say without being there in person. I couldn’t find any good room examples of the Behr color (just virtual). You’ll just have to sample it to see.

Looking that up, I came across this bloggers sunroom, thinking it was the Behr, but it’s actually Valspar Bonsai. More on the gray side, but lighter than yours. Just wanted to show, it does look pretty dark:

There are so many wonderful sage colors out there. If you decide the Bonsai Pot is too dark, I’d just look up inspiration pics for ideas. Search sage green sunrooms, and other similar terms.

Try a sample of the Bonsai Pot and see. It is very pretty. I think darker sunrooms can be very cozy and beautiful. Just depends on the feel you’re wanting.

Looks like a wonderful room to decorate! If it was for me, I would paint the whole room in white and use colour for accents, I show a few white sunrooms in white to help you consider. I did a floor plan based on your pictures since I didn't find it seemed conversational friendly. I would place a natural fiber rug to bring all the furniture together and also paint the 2 steps in white with a natural fiber runner (available at places such as Home Depot). I also show a console table behind the sofa to bring it forward into the room and closer to the facing loveseat. The rattan table lamps on the console and a black reading floor lamp next to the loveseat would provide lighting when needed along with the light on the ceiling fan (I show a more modern one). For accents, you can choose your favorite colour for accent pillows with you white sofa and loveseat, a throw, etc., here I show green accents. A few prints on the wall would also be nice. You seem to have white solar shades which are fine.
