How to shorten this downspout extension?

Not thrilled with the slope of the extension. Should I shorten the extension or remove the hinge from the downspout and move it up? Trying to get things to flow OUT and not get stuff at the end.

Comments (1)SWC, How much perpendicular slope do you have on your walkway away from the house? How much slope away from the house beyond the sidewalk to the garden areas? The top of pipe could be below the brick sidewalk by as little as 2" in well compacted sand. The slighter the slope the bigger the pipe has to be unlike your downspout which has vertical drop and turbulent flow. Just have a larger diameter pipe under the sidewalk than your downspout and have then have a removable vertical section fitted into the under sidewalk portion 90 degree bend. Comments (8)Have you looked into copper plated? We did copper plated gutters (has been around since the 50s)and solid copper downspouts. We would have done the copper plated downspouts as well but they didn't have round ones - only the standard crimped looking ones. The copper plated ones are similar to these copper plus ones, but we do have half round gutters (I don't see them pictured): http://www.guttersupply.com/m-copper-clad-stainless-steel.gstml All said, our copper gutters cost twice your quote so that sounds like a bargain! In fact, I think it was around 3k for just standard half round gutters with round downspouts. . . I actually prefer it without leader boxes, except where necessary (we have a couple but they are to catch gutters from above or drainage from where a roof meets, etc.). Comments (2)The diy video has the right idea. But twisty light gauge aluminum is the wrong material to use. Instead, use large diameter plumbing drainage pipes with tight fittings. The downspout should be directed into a 3" or 4" PVC or ABS wye fitting above grade. This provides a cleanout point should you ever need it. At the end of the run, you use a "popup". It stays closed until there's water flow, then closes when the water stops flowing. This deters critters from taking residence in your drains. The corrugated pipes you're using should be those that have a sleeve around them to resist plant roots attracted to the water. To help with drainage, I rest the pipes on a bed of free-flowing gravel. No fines. I installed hard and corrugated downspout drainage all round for our last home that we had six years. This is a cold climate and there were no problems. I did notice that some of the unsleeved corrugated lines we dug up for a pool were infiltrated by shrubbery roots. I've use similar drainage at corners of a couple of homes I've built since, also with no problems reported. I often see new homes where the builders dump the downspouts onto driveways, which turn into sheets of deadly ice in the winter. Underground drainage is a cheap safe alternative. The only odd side effect I noticed was that the grass around the drainage lines was much lusher and healthier than the rest of our lawn. Comments (15)Landed here from a Google search where I had the same problem. What I discovered is that after heavy rain/snow melt, the water table around our house rises to the level of the underground french drain, into which the house gutter downspouts empty. And then, one of our sump pump outlets is routed into the downspout near the foundation. So when the water table is high, the french drain is saturated, and cannot take on any additional water, especially the water volume from the sump pump. My decision was to install a ball valve and a cleanout T connection in the sump pump outlet, so when the water table is high, I close off the route into the downspout, and connect a 20ft long pipe to the cleanout T (it's threaded, so I use a trap adapter to screw in to the T connection) that runs out to the driveway. It's not ideal, but it works. When it rains hard or we get a flood watch, I turn the valve and run the pump water out to the driveway instead of overflowing my french drains....See MoreStax

last yearJust a thought, we use these where we wanted a short run at the ground. You could gravel out the area more around the run so it’s more visible to not trip over.
