Wish I'd found this forum before today...electrician coming!
Comments (1)From your description, you have 13 recessed lights in the kitchen, not counting the 4 lighting the walking path. That does sound like a lot of light, but it depends on how high your ceilings are, the general color scheme of the kitchen, and of course the type and wattage of the bulbs. Since your cabinets and counter are dark, you will not be getting a lot of reflectivity from them. An important factor to consider is that recessed lights mainly provide downlight, which can cause harsh and unflattering shadows on people's faces and objects. Hopefully your island pendants will provide some general ambient lighting to wash out the shadows. Ambient lighting is important to light the ceiling as well. Having a dark ceiling will make the volume of the room seem more closed in. Lit ceilings tend to make rooms feel like they have a more expansive volume. Having everything on dimmers is helpful. Make sure to use bulbs that have a beam spread wide enough to overlap with the adjacent lights. I found it very useful to look at the guidelines in the Juno Lighting Residential catalog for recessed lighting. Can be found on their website. Good luck......See MoreElectrician Dented New Floors
Comments (13)Can you post a picture? My DH has dropped and dented our floors (also 3/4 inch prefinished) a couple of times and I was able to caulk them with matching wood putty and it worked perfectly. We did used it also for nail holes close to the walls and you can't even see them. In regards to getting it fixed, I'd leave it, sanding, restaining and varnishing for the sake of a small dent in a floor that will obviously get worn in time anyways just because you didn't do the dent is not reasonable. Should he have been more careful? yes, should he have to pay what could essentially be a lot of money to fix it, under the circumstances, no. I'm sure if the shoe were on the other foot, you'd agree. However, I'd probably mention it to him so he'll be more careful next time....See MoreWhen the electricians damage your cabinets...
Comments (29)"Oh, clean facilities? Stupid idiot contractors think they deserve that dignity?" "Doctors and lawyers are always provided a place to pee at work. Contractors, not so much." These kind of complaints chap my hide. Some plumbing site had a letter to the public how we should treat contractors better by letting them use our bathrooms. What a ridiculous plea! If it's a build site or large project, the GC should be providing something for his crew, just as an office does. I used to naively welcome workmen to use my bathroom. This is now a problem - because they think they are entitled to be slobs . Maybe if they acted with dignity and respected the use of someone's home bathroom, people wouldn't mind letting them use their facilities. But when they pee all over your toilet and floor, they kind of lose that privilege and respect. It's simply terribly disrespectful to homeowners and the properties they are working on. I'm sorry but I think anyone knows better. They just don't care and, honestly, I think some of these people get a kick out of it. There's a whole discussion about it here: Here is a link that might be useful: bathroom use...See MoreBuilding a Bookcase with my New Miter Saw
Comments (4)Easiest place to look is at a home improvement store---Lowe's, Menards, or Home Depot---depending on where you live. By looking at several, you can select the one with which you feel most comfortable. The project you have selected to start is rather advanced, but with careful planning and practice, there is no reason you cannot do it. There will be a lot of mistakes---one way to minimize cost is to try the process first with a less expensive wood. I often use pine or poplar, for instance, to make test cuts and the necessary adjustments. That saves the more expensive oak/maple/etc for the real thing. While you are looking at books, look for books on finishing----finishing a cabinet often begins before final assembly....See MoreJoseph Corlett, LLC
