Speckled-leaf bulbous plant

Picked this up at a plant swap today. A common name was mentioned, which I have since forgotten. So... what is this pretty little plant?

Possibly Arum maculatum, "cuckoo pint", "Lord's and Ladies", and several other non-official names. There are several other arums with spotted leaves.

At first glance, I don't think that's it. The leaves on my plant are rather lax, and not arrow-shaped. Arums I believe are sturdier.

you plant those in a pot... so that next spring.. you have leaves to compare with what pops out of the ground... and then hit all the one in the ground with 41% round up ... your other choice.. is to sieve the whole garden ... been there done that with grape hyacinth ... use the expensive applicator at the link... to PRECISELY apply 100% round up to each leaf .. return the RU to its properly labeled container after use ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: brand is not important..

Hard to tell for sure from the photos, but this is very likely lacebug damage. A photo of the leaf undersides would be helpful as jean001a indicated. Even without a photo, if you see brown, somewhat shiny markings - excrement from lacebug nymphs - on the leaf under surfaces, that would confirm the diagnosis. The damaged leaves will not recover, but you need to protect the new leaves this year. See what is recommended in your area and time spraying according to schedules advocated by your state ag department or county extension service.

Thank-you iris gal. I was hesitant to label them because it's been a long time since I planted them and when I did I didn't know the value of names. They're all from mart's so they could be anything. The purples were in several mixed reticulata bags of something like 75 bulbs each. I had hundreds of blooms the first Spring but all have dwindled away to a few small clusters (not even clumps). I did plant a few bags marked as 'Harmony' in the area that the blue bloomed, but I wouldn't say that's what it is with any certainty. As long as you've been here I'm sure you know, but maybe others don't, the yellow is i. danfordiae. I really love the green speckles and style arms. Brock

Why so many little bulbous cucumbers?

If your fruits weren't fully pollinated, you might try growing parthenocarpic varieties, like Monika or Little Leaf. Parthenocarpic varieties will develop fruit without pollination (but they'll be seedless if they're not pollinated). You might also look for cucumbers that resist bacterial wilt, though, since cucumber beetles are supposed to spread it. Here's a list of cucumbers that are supposed to resist or tolerate bacterial wilt: Ashley, Chinese Long, Chipper, County Fair, Eversweet, Gemini, Improved Long Green, Saticoy Hybrid, Sunnybrook, Tokio Long, Marketmore 76, Marketmore 80, Salad Bush, and Regal. I think Little Leaf and Cross Country also tolerate it. I'm not sure which tolerate the beetles themselves, though, and which, if any, are parthenocarpic besides Little Leaf. Hmm. I just found out that County Fair is already parthenocarpic. So, pollination shouldn't be the issue there, unless it's not the true variety, or unless it's only somewhat parthenocarpic. I don't know if Armenian Cucumbers, African Horned Cucumbers (AKA Kiwano) and West India Burr Gherkins tolerate cucumber beetles better than cucumbers do (they're all different species than each other, but they're all still cucurbits). I just looked at reviews, and according to Todd, West India Burr Gherkins weren't bothered by cucumber beetles; they should grow quite well in humidity, too, from what I've read (I know southern Indiana is fairly humid; I'm not sure about the north).

Its hard to make out the leaf shape, because all the leaves are twisted and curled in the photo. Arum species have hastate leaves, but they arent always sagittate. The leaves look hastate in the photo. The texture seems right. These leaves would seem more flaccid if compared to other aroids like Monstera and Philodendron. I agree that this is Arum maculatum Lords and Ladies. If you dont think the leaves are hastate, would you submit another photo, with a leaf entirely unfolded, to show the shape.

I’m not completely convinced it’s A maculatum. That is a weed in my garden and I know it well. This plant looks a bit too sturdy and fleshy and the spots are a bit too well defined. The leaf size in proportion to the stem seems off too. Also A maculatum is already dying back in my climate. It’s hard to believe it would be greener in Texas in May than here in the UK. Could there be a Texas variant?

Better picture of the leaves:

The curling seems to be a consistent feature of this plant. To me, the leaves don't resemble any of the arum maculatum photos I've found online - both in terms of the shape of the leaf itself and how it is held on the plant. I'll see if I can get an answer through the organization that organized the plant swap. Thanks for the suggestions thus far.

I've been informed from the swap group that it's false African hosta, Drimiopsis maculata. This appears to be a highly variable species, but some online photos do look like my plants.
