I can't see the brick, unless it is the hearth. If it is, I would leave it.

If you love the natural wood, then don't paint it right away or remove it. It might grow on your husband.

But I would rather see a TV over a console and a beautiful painting hung on the fireplace.

DARK??? Nothing about that listing pic is dark! I sure hope it's not the wood in this pic you are white washing away!! It's the character in the room!! I agree with you the fireplace is a keeper as is. That little bit of brick hearth is not a concern--well as is it isn't. If you've ruined the room with paint we need a new pic to help. What are those floors? They look so interesting, unusual in a great way.

I would paint the trim around doors/windows and base/crown but leave the fireplace and beams wood. It’s beautiful and adds a lot of character to the room. If you both disliked it down the road then you could change later. Not sure I’d even mess with whitewashing brick.

Paint the trim and reevaluate. I think the fireplace wood will look out of place once the trim is painted, but maybe not.

I would keave the FP alone paint the rest of the trim first . That TV needs to have a differnt home it is too high for viewing and IMO ruins the look of the FP That appears to be a large room so I need a to scale floor plan to help with TV placement but for sure not there. BTW I agree to leave the beams too I actully do not find the space dark but I also do not like that wood with the floor so it is a bit of a problem. Maybe the answer is to do the FP in a nice large format tile to work with the floor (what is the flooring) I also need some clue to your style if you are thinking farmhouse then IMO paint all the trim incluing the beams but I need more info and a to scale plan.

'Outdated' only because painted MDF trim is a lot cheaper than wood trim. Material cost and because a stain grade trim package requires a skilled finish carpenter to install. You can't hide boo boos with putty & caulk & paint.

White and stained wood is classic. If anything is dating the room, it is the carpet.

For now, in addition to painting trim, I’d paint walls the same color as ceiling for a fresher, lighter, updated feel.

Leave the fireplace until you get a better sense of room with your own furniture/accessories and take your time looking at inspiration rooms. Really important to consider short and long term and when you have a vision for room, each change will be cohesive and complementary.

It’s a bright and beautiful room. If you are concerned about dark and dated, for sure don’t add gray.

And I agree about a larger tv NOT over the fireplace. The room seems very large so it can hold a very large tv.

Jessica, have you tried moving your furniture to be more centered on the fireplace? What does your DH think about a larger TV?
