Retractable Awnings - Are There Any Good Ones Out There?
Comments (5)A little late to the game, but in case you're still looking... here's an idea: have you looked at adjustable louvered roofs? They might be more expensive than what you're looking for b/c they're more than awnings for sure. BUT they last forever, unlike the awning and are a true investment in your home. They're like a pergola but the louvers adjust via remote control 160 degrees to open for sun or close for shade and rain protection. They're super durable and can be clad to fit design styles. But, like I said, they're a significant jump in price from an awning. BUT they're a lot less than a porch (unless you add all the whistles and bells like screening, heaters, speakers, PVC cladding, lighting, fans, etc...in that case, it might come a bit closer to a porch cost) A basic one for your size deck, w/ a fan, would prob cost you anywhere between $7K-15K depending on size of the Equinox and other variables and such. Here's a pic of a basic one from Core Outdoor Living in DC Metro region. You can probably search adjustable louvered roof or Equinox Adjustable Louvered Roof and find dealer/installers in your area. You can check out Core's portfolio too to get ideas. http://www.coreoutdoor.com/equinox/...See MoreWaterproof cover / awning / cloth / fabric ? Sheets ?
Comments (3)Since there must be some timber framing involved for a lean-to of that size, why not just take it the logical step forward and roof it off as well? OSB, some tar paper and shingles and it will last for years. Use the same siding on the garage for any sides you want enclosed. That would be much less of an 'eyesore' IMO than canvas or even greenhouse panels (unless you intend to use this as a greenhouse........)...See MoreHow can I add to my roof to cover my front entryway?
Comments (10)If the siding is corrected and the ground is sloped away from your foundation and you have properly installed and functional weeping tile around your foundation, you won't have a leak. A cover over your front entry is a nice feature and will keep you dry while you're searching for your keys. But it's not meant to keep your foundation from leaking. If that were its purpose, you'd need a cover all the way around your house....See MoreBetter to cover pile of leaves with plastic? How to add NEW leaves?
Comments (28)I hate to see you spend money on materials, but yes, it would heat it up, I think. Don't let Starbucks discourage you---I don't think they will; they advertise about their "green-ness". I find it helps if I stand aside and wait until they ask if they can help me. Then I say, "I'm a gardener. I wonder if this is a good time to get some grounds." I say that, because often they have a trash can ready to be emptied. Warning: I never get glass or trash in my Starbucks grounds, but some people have. I don't know about mice. I've never really seen them in my piles, but they're definitely around---building straw nests in plant pots in my shed, and they filled a empty bee hive, stored in my old chicken house, with insulation. Water makes an inhospitable environment for them. I think people attempt to discourage them by keeping the pile damp. You can make nice compost using just the feedstock that your wife is comfortable with---or you could mention old_dirt's blue gills, which might make some fruit additions seem like a happy compromise. Pumpkins can generate a lot of heat, but squirrels like them, so they'd probably attract mice. I once read that yarrow was a compost accelerator. My compost pile is just where I put stuff that doesn't have to go to the landfill, so I have some piles that don't heat up, but they still produce compost in a year. My leaf piles take longer, but are well worth the wait. I really, really like to make compost, so I'm willing to be a little more eccentric than most people. Your kitchen sink gray water is a source of water that could be captured and put on your pile, if you don't mind slopping water through the house....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
