Miele 24" Combi Steam Oven vs 30"? Separate Fridge and Freezer?

I'm planning a full kitchen remodel, so I can plan it any way I like within the boundaries of a small kitchen. Because of its size issues, my husband and I decided it might be best to install a 24" XXL Miele Combi Steam Oven stacked with the same width Miele Micro/Convection oven. We are planning to forgo a traditional 30" convection wall oven and microwave. Not worried about holiday dinners or doing turkeys (small family). Are we crazy to custom-design our cabinetry around 24" wide appliances versus more traditional 30" cutouts? Not sure why I care about "the next owner" (hoping we are in this house another 10 years), but is the extra space for pantry cabinets worth more than installing traditional-sized appliances? If the Mieles ever need replacing by us or future owners, I'm not sure if their 30" appliance cutouts exactly match other brands' 30" specs. Please comment if anyone has an opinion on installing 24" versions and skipping a traditional wall oven (some would cringe at the thought, but I'm really into the idea of just getting used to a combi steam oven and convection microwave and doing away with a traditional oven).

Also thinking of putting in a built-in 36" all-fridge in the main kitchen and a 30" all-freezer in the adjacent mudroom. I assume the next owner might have preferred a 36" fridge/freezer in the main space. My plan isn't very common, but I it might help me avoid the pain of needing the extra fridge and freezer in the basement.) Does these plans seem like good ideas?

I have a thermador steam oven, I use it a lot. It does everything that you need to be done, im sure the miele does the same. The thermador is 30” and although its very large for a steam oven, its not huge. I feel like a 24” oven is going to be quite small as the only oven in the home. Id find a place for a regular oven and maybe find a drawer micro, or do as I have done and put the microwave in the pantry. I kicked around putting a freezer in the pantry, and to save space, its a good idea my 2c

I don't understand the reason for installing 24" appliances rather than standard 30" appliances that will do what you want such as the LG Studio WCES6428F30 Inch Electric Double Wall Steam Oven/Microwave Combo or having the inconvenience of a freezer in another room rather than a 36" French door refrigerator, some of which such as the LG LMWS27626S 36 Inch Freestanding 4 Door French Door Refrigerator have an enormous 27 cu. ft. capacity or even larger LG LRMWS2906S 36 Inch Freestanding 4 Door French Door Refrigerator with 29 cu. ft.

We have one of the 24" fully integrated Liebherrs adjacent to a 30" Thermador Freedom refrigerator. The Liebherr was installed in September '09. Yes, we love it, although the best thing about this refrigerator is that I don't even notice it's there most of the time: it's dead quiet. Since we have a full freezer in our lower level, we didn't feel the need to have much freezer space in the kitchen, although I am surprised just how much we can stuff into those three freezer drawers. Sometimes I cram in so much that it's a bit difficult to open and close the freezer drawers, but that's entirely on me. The Liebherr has become what we call our "condiment refrigerator." It holds MANY bottles plus extra milk, eggs, seltzer, and the like. I will say that right after it was installed, I was a bit disconcerted by the condensation running down the back wall even though I knew it was part of the refrigerator's normal operation. I have not noticed much, if any, moisture on that wall for quite some time which may be because most of what we store in the Liebherr is sealed. All in all, I am very happy with it, especially since it was a floor model that we purchased at a deep discount.

The Bosch Integra is essentially the same as the Thermador Freedom, so if you are considering the Freedom, I'd also give Bosch a look... We have the Integra 30" fridge and 24" freezer. They work great so far. I don't recall all the size options, but 30" may be the largest. Our kitchen couldn't accomodate anything larger than that. Good Luck!

Thanks Marcydc. Changing the first filter was hard because the installer used big honkin' working man muscles to tighten it so tight we needed tools to unscrew it (I had psychologist man muscles working on it, but he needed pliers for leverage). The real difficulty, however, is changing the filter, and fixing the filter code, without warming up the freezer. After my third change I've learned a few things: The book says that when the filter light first comes on it's just a warning, and when the light changes state (starts or stops blinking--can't remember which), it's time to change. Tech help told me I should change as soon as it comes on, and that the trouble I've had resetting the filter indicator comes from letting it go to the end. In that case, it has to be changed in program mode rather than customer mode. The other thing I've learned is not to even try to reset right after changing the filter. My unit won't go into customer mode if it's even a little warm, and if it loses too much cool, it won't go into program either. It's basically trying to say, "Shut the door, idiot!!!" It's easy enough to change the filter and wait a number of hours. I always set aside some ice, because you're supposed to throw away the first 24 hrs. worth, so waiting another 6-12 hours is no biggie. But what defines "hard"? For me, it's the procedure to get into customer mode or program mode. It's arcane in a way that only a German engineer could like. It's like looking for easter eggs in a computer game. I can't hold the instructions and do the routine at the same time. That's "hard".

Just for clarity, the Miele cooler boxes are made at the BSH factory in Turkay. The electronics are made by Miele, I believe (but am not sure) in Germany, and I've heard that final assembly is in Germany. Still not USA, but for what it's worth. I chose Miele primarily because the units fit better in my kitchen. I grew up with SubZero and originally assumed I'd get that. Both are good. SubZero has a long history of mostly exceptional units. Miele created the current offerings for the North American market so there's much less of a record, but the repair folks seem to think they're just as good. Things I liked better about Miele, besides the sizes, include the lower drawers that are the full depth of the firdge and the shallow door shelves, the height, the feel of the drawers and shelves, the angle of the doors when open, and, of course, the glamour lighting. I also like how easy it is to remove the shelves and baskets for cleaning. I think one of the weak points, however, is where the clips that hold the drawers on the rails connect. They're a little too plasticy, sometimes squeek, and I worry that they may break at some point. Oh, and getting the filters in and out is harder than it looks. OTOH, I love the drawer temperature selections. Word of warning: The dispenser is the weakest part of any unit, and the ice maker is second. You might look into the merits of the two models on that level as a decision point besides price. I have no information about it on these particular units, however. Whichever you choose will be excellent. Enjoy!

My understanding is that the Miele 24” has the same capacity as the 30”. The only difference is the trim. Some people want to stack them with their 30” wall ovens and want the edges to match.

Convection/micro combos haven't worked for us as more than a micro. Your steam oven will be used instead. So, just put in a micro. Most likely you won't use the micro once you're used to the steam oven. Separate frig and freezer is a good idea.

If you are getting the Miele Speed Oven then it will work as a second oven. I have both the CSO and Speed along with a 30” wall oven. I mainly use my speed oven as an oven. It has a bottom and top heating element unlike conventional convection microwaves. It has all the oven modes as my CSO except for those needing steam. The CSO can only heat to 435 and the speed to 475. These ovens are more difficult to keep clean than a conventional 30” wall oven. There is no self clean mode and the Miele interior finish is not suppose to be used with oven cleaners like Easy Off. There are several threads about cleaning these ovens. I do not cook foods that produce alot of grease or splatter - those go in my wall oven or on the grill. I have had have my ovens for 7 years and they look not quite like new but almost - I have also not had to do a ”deep” clean on my CSO. I boil water and white vinegar to clean my speed oven. They are geat ovens but they do have their limitations.
