70s Split... Exterior Colour Suggestions?
Comments (4)Here are some more inspiration pics. If you want to use cedar, the logical placement is to continue the line from the overhang over the front door to the garage with the cedar from under the front door overhang to the bottom edge of the second floor. By painting the front door a modern color it would change the entire front. Good luck! ^ ^ ^ Note red front door Frank Lloyd Wright 1893 Winslow House^ ^ ^ Note continuation of garage and front entrance. Heavy trim. ^ ^ ^ Note horizontal trim, stone bottom section, use of color ^ ^ ^ Note heavy white trim to delineate house details, wood garage door and stone bottom section ^ ^ ^ Note white trim, wood garage doors, stone bottom section...See MoreSmall exterior makeover on 70's house
Comments (28)Shutters. Yeah, I was an early adopter of the size-appropriateness, but there's more to it. Hinges, dogs, latches, and this: if they are louvered, the louvers need to be pointing up when they are open, so that they point down when they are closed, letting water run down them. But, since very few people ever close their functioning shutters in the US, the louvers need to point down when they are open so they don't rot. Personal family story: a relative visiting from the old country told my grandfather his shutters were upside down. He flipped them accordingly, but the next year he noticed trouble with the water running behind the shutters. So back they flipped. Incorrect but not a problem. So, don't get into the math of the shutters. They are decorative. Just make for a pleasing proportion. Your house is charming. Consider putting a cement or limestone cap on the planter, put non-living seasonal decor on it, maybe something on the wall behind, and enjoy. My personal presence for metals is brass, but that's just me....See More70s Brick Ranch - Exterior Color Scheme?
Comments (8)So long as you use a ceramic or mineral based paint you should be fine painting the brick. It basically makes the maintanence that comes with painting brick disappear. The house looks a bit dark as is. I would paint, personally. It would help bring this 70s house up to date. Maybe an off white or gray to help it go with the roof. Comments (9)What are you open too? To me the white wash, while fine by itself, makes the remaining wood even more orange. I would paint all the remaining wood white (maybe whitewash the beams?) and the walls (the drywall portions) a nice off white. Currently the trim looks skimpy because it is so dark next to the whitewash, I think painted it will come back into proportion....See MoreTonya Vantol
