Yeah, I thought that too, like toolgirl. But I have a friend who does everything perfectly, so i accept. I also found, but didnt mention till now, that you can get any color you want if you will order 1000 of them. Maybe some log cabin association could organize something. You have three choices. (A)expend the effort to locate the source of this noise-i.e. rethink "risking falling thru the ceiling and disturbing...insulation" and find the #$%^ thing. (B) hire a (presumably insured)professional to do option (A). (C) "continue to let them chirp several times a day"...(and if you are lucky the source of the noise isn't some hardwired device). I would find the source one way or the other, it wouldn't be the first drywall repair for me.

My goodness, We had the same problem as a number of you — intermittent "chirping" every 45 seconds from a mysterious location. I removed every possible smoke detector (unplugged from ceiling) as well as removed all the batteries — still chirping!! We were 100% sure we didn't have any additional smoke/CO detectors lying around anywhere. The chirping sounded like it was coming from the ceiling, localized in one of our bedrooms. I spent three hours crawling around in the attic, digging through "cotton candy" insulation, trying to find a dying smoke detector that may have been left up there somewhere. What a nightmare! Turns out, my wife had left a spare CO detector sitting in a basket atop our bookshelf. She had sworn we didn't have any of the damn things anywhere. The way I finally found the thing was by using a free decibel detector app on my smartphone. Every time it beeps you read the meter and then move closer to the sound (getting warmer!) -- finally after 4 days of chirping I figured it out. Not a great experience.

OK, the plot thickens. We found an electrician who will provide us with an interface device (for ~ $100) to connect our line-voltage smoke detectors to a low-voltage alarm panel (and thus include it in our 24 hour monitoring service). But he doesn't want to come to our house for what he says is a '5 minute job'. They're all exceptionally busy right now, and can be very picky about what they do. I don't blame him -- nobody is offering to supplement his income when times are slow, so he's making hay while the sun shines. We have three smoke detectors installed, interfaced. There are 3 wires to each one -- a black, white and yellow. The yellow is the wire through which the three detectors communicate with each other when smoke is detected by any one of them. It looks to me as though all I have to do is wire the interface device to the yellow wire in one of the smoke detectors. See page 5 of the Firex Smoke Detector manual at the link below. If that is the correct procedure, I am sure I can do that myself. I'd simply shut off the breaker to that circuit, check to be sure it is shut off, cut the yellow wire, and splice both ends plus an extension wire with a wire nut. The extension wire can then go to the alarm panel, where the alarm company will connect it to the panel. Does that make sense? The alternative to installing the line voltage interface myself is to have the alarm company install 3 wireless smoke detectors at an estimated price of $775.
