Please understand the differences in "stainless steel" that allow magnetic susceptibility. The SS that stays shiny and is usually easily cleaned has both chromium and nickel in it, and magnets won't stick to it. The SS that is fairly shiny but can develop staining from fingerprints and other chemicals has no chromium and will allow magnets to stick. It may resist staining if clear coated, but there have been reports here of coating failure. Otherwise, occasional cleaning with dilute phosphoric acid may be needed, with attendant safety protocols. (Coca cola might work after degreasing the surface.) Of course, there are various intermediate SS blends possible, as well as laminated SS over steel that might also be magnetic, although we have had here a recent case of rusting with such a design.

Perhaps attaching a piece of painted steel to the door at an appropriate height with removable adhesive or double-sticky tape would allow magnets to be used and allow a wider selection of refrigerators to be considered. Periodically the attached piece could be raised to a comfortable height for the growing child.

From a personal historical perspective, I would observe that children have been successfully raised without magnetic refrigerator devices, even when there were refrigerators with painted steel doors that could have functioned with magnets, as well as when there were "ice boxes" with wooden doors. Given the fingerprint problem that might result with a magnetically susceptible door surface, I would suggest going with a painted refrigerator.

I would perhaps hang a big bulletin board on a wall to put the kids' stuff you want to put on the fridge. Solves a multitude of problems including the clutter look of a fridge covered with a lot of things stuck on it, meanwhile you spent several thousands on that fridge.
