With that ceiling a fan is a MUST if you want any warm air down where people are sitting. Where do you live? What ever light meets your fancy I strongly suggest you also keep the fan.

Thank you for the tip! We live in Michigan, outside Detroit area, so it does get very cold in winter and hot in summer. I actually needed to turn the fan on this morning 😏 I'm not totally against a ceiling fan but definitely don't want to keep this particular one. I think it's too small (and hung a little too high?) and it's ugly lol...so at least need to swap it out. Any ideas what style/size would work best?

You have to remember fans are a utility item, If you hang them too low in a room this size they wont cycle the air the way they should. I would be looking at a 60-65 inch fan. Look at Minka aire, monte carlo, and Kichler.

Many will say, "decorate only at eye level where people look.. and live." Seems logical then that a small item near the ceiling shouldn't matter, that is, who's really noticing? I am not implying what decorating you've done is of no matter - it looks great from here.

Without fp's dark-framed mirror's visuals, and RL's softer abstract art, a 'nearby' chandelier seems good.

personally I would re arragnge the whole room so the tv is on the buffett near the window and the sofa is on the back wall.

So it sounds like the mirrow above firepace doesn't work? I just bought that a few weeks ago, thought it was pretty 😕 I also bought the 2 big abstract flower pictures recently...that wall was so large and empty. If they clash I could probably find a spot for them in my basement once we finish it. I would like to put something on that wall tho...? The room does look better in that adjusted photo...removing the potted palm tree is a good idea (seems like it's the wrong type of leaf). Would a different kind work better? Or incorporating other faux greenery in another spot? It's not a "formal" room...for us, its our family/hang-out room. I will be replacing the couch at some pt (once my babies stop spilling crap on it every other day 🤦🏼‍♀️) but for now, I'm trying to make the larger pcs work. Small tables/accents or additional pcs I can change/add.

And I DO want a new rug. I had this one made like 18 months ago...it's a Kane carpet but not holding up as well as I'd hoped. This room gets SO MUCH traffic...I want something really soft, plush but not shag (kids to sit and play) that holds up well.

My husband wants to have regular wall-to-wall crapet installed but that would require ripping up the wood floor which I will NOT allow. Any recommendations on carpet brands that are super soft and durable? We have a Perfect Floors near-by that gave me pretty good prices for custom rugs...having a 12x16' made is much cheaper than trying to buy one online somewhere. The only downfall is there are very limited patterns and colors to choose from...esp with the characteristics I'm looking for.

Not sure about a chandelier but I would suggest removing the mirror from the fireplace. Whenever you use mirrors as decorative elements it's best to make sure they reflect something worth seeing. In the second photo all you see is the railing for the floor above. That conflicts with the pattern in the mirror itself.

While I love the idea of a beautiful chandelier I think a ceiling fan with that ceiling is a must have for a room you use in that climate. A fan with a DC motor will be your best bet, try Big Ass Fans although Minka makes some large fans with DC motors as well. I would not bother with one with a light. Focus your light below where it is most flattering anyway. Mix it up with sconces, table lamps and floor lamp.

Agree to invest in a really good fan, you will likely have to pay someone to install it so it is worth the money to get the right size/power options - I would forgo the light on the fan and light the room with table/floor lamps, makes it so much cozier

Minka Aire Artemis 5 blade fan - I can’t seem to post the link. Mine is a 62” and it moves a whole lot of air! We had one in a 15’ ceiling’ed room that was about 16’ x 24’. One downside is that it’s a single light only.

It seems like having just a fan is the most practical. Lighting 17 (or 15) feet up in a room is practically worthless. Nothing would be bright enough to illuminate the area so far below, or if it would, it would have to be so bright it would blind you from the upper levels. Too high up for mood lighting. Much better to have your lighting lower in the room like with your sconces and table lamps, so I'd just find a fabulous fan you love and forget getting a lighted one.
You did a great job with your black and white portrait gallery! The mirror is beautiful, but I agree that you can find a better place for it. Maybe try one of the large flower prints over the mantel and see what you think. It is a little odd to have art hung so high above the part of the room where you actually live instead of down where you can see it, but I know those big blank expanses seem odd to leave empty, too.

New day, and I think new .. your mirror adds a nice contrast to the fp stones, and is different than art on adjacent wall...

My earlier post was in response to a striking chandelier in a post, which took the place of the mirror... forget that! :) it's nice and you thought so!

Oh and a main thing is mirror's arch, a soft break from rectangles all around.

Thank you everyone for the feedback! Still searching for a fan...it seems so many of the larger ones have an industrial kind of look to them and I'm not sure I like that. I looked on big ass fans and none of them were very appealing to me...some super expensive too 😕 I do agree now that a fan would probably be best so if anybody comes across a specific one that would look good in this room, I'd love to know!

I think I will move the mirror...you're right Norwood, it does seem to reflect the railing (and the photo wall) and all those lines take away from the mirror's pattern. Idt a flower pic from the wall will work tho, they're too big. I'll search for another piece of art. Any ideas?

I was kind of using these photos I found on pinterest as inspiration for this room...a room with 2 main focal points I guess. There aren't many ways to arrange it with the current pieces I have (esp as a family room with kids 😏) There are A LOT of prof decorated 2 story rooms with art on the high walls...are these wrong? I'm a big fan of hanging anything at eye level (which is why I did not want to mount our TV above the fireplace) So I understand how hanging stuff way up there goes against that. I just felt that it was such a large expanse of nothingness I needed to fill it. 😊 Maybe I should move them tho. I'm thinking about it! Thanks again everyone!

Your upper art is a minimal nature look, and that's about perfect imo. Not fussy, or ornate - as to reflections, imo that's secondary to the value of the item itself: and that is its contrasting grid and rounded arch. Please leave it! :)

but, if there's a slight visual busyness, the clock could go, but I can't tell how large it is - just doesn't seem 'needed'.
