When we moved into our house two years ago the previous owners had finished the basement and put in two ceiling fans as well. I don't know why, because basements are never hot. We removed them and put in semi-flush fixtures. So don't put in another fan unless you're accustomed to using one of them now. There are hundreds of choices for semi-flush and flush fixtures, so I'm sure you can find something you like. We also have recessed cans. If there aren't some in your basement already, talk to the electrician about putting some of those in also so you have more even lighting in the room. I have the cans dimmed down when we're watching television, but I do use them. And when cleaning that room I can turn them up high so I can see all the corners.

Thank you, I'm not sure why they are down there, either. When we noticed they were coming apart, our electrician took a look at them and apparently they were wired incorrectly as well. It's been just fine there without fans even on hot days.
