My roses are waking up!!!
Comments (9)Can't wait, blooms are right around the bend. Lots of tender new growth making an appearance. Darned cold likely to nip them! The angle of the sun also heralds the oncoming onslaught of leaves and bloom, what we have all been waiting for this long, cold winter. Birds are getting restless, pairing-off protocols in progress. Even the smell of the air is just different. Ditto on the puttering, lists are made to be misplaced, why do today when you can put it off 'til tomorrow? I love to just ponder and goof off amongst the great company of my roses. With the new school of thought on leaving rose debris underneath the plants, I just chop prunings up real small and leave them as mulch, no bagging. Recycling rocks! I love spring!!...See MoreWhen will my Crepe Myrtle wake up?
Comments (37)I bought from them. I have very mixed emotions about it. The owner is 100% unresponsive. I spoke with a lady named Emily, who did help me replace 12 plants that didn't come back. I ordered the bulk package in November, which was probably too late. When they didn't come back, I emailed a billion times with no result. (I hate to talk on the phone.) When I finally called and got someone (October, the following year, she got me organized with replacements. A few of them have come back. Probably 6 have not. Ironically, I'm not dissatisfied with my experience because she was so quick to do what she needed to do. The fact that some didn't return I figure was the luck of the draw so late in the year. I have not contacted them to see if they'll replace those that didn't come back a 2nd time, since I doubt they will. I also don't care that much, since I can try rooting cuttings when they're a tiny bit larger. And no, their color reports are as subjective as any one else's. If you haven't seen one yourself, I've learned I won't buy it -- unless they claim it's white. My idea of red seems to mean dark pink (Victor and Tonto) to many other people. My idea of purple or magenta seems to mean lilac (Catawba) to others as well. Tuscaroara seems to be the one true agreement in that it's a beautiful watermelon color. Remember, just because you haven't heard of a 6'' CM doesn't mean someone hasn't developed one. I just today bought a 'White Chocolate, which has burgundy foliage and (hopefully) white blossoms. I would have told you CMs didn't come with that color leaf. Now I'm just looking for a 'Burgundy Cotton' to compliment it! Christine...See MoreMy yard is waking up
Comments (17)@bahamadan, thanks. As for my Oro blanco on Macrophylla I was told when I planted it that the rootstock would only give me dry fruits. The 3 I harvested this season were definitely dry and no good but I chocked that up to the trees age and this being its first season bearing fruit. Carrizo seems to really struggle in my high alkali soils and when reading through the citrus variety collection on tangos the Brix rating was only 1%-2% lower on macro than on Carrizo or trifoliate rootstock so I figured, hey why not give it a shot. As for leaf miners I use imadicloprid systemically 3 times per year. It's my only choice in the desert, I've tried spinosad and neem oil but it burns my leaves because when the leaf miners show up here it's already getting to the 100 degree mark. I stop using it a couple months before harvest so as to try and minimize mine and my families exposure to the chemical. I am also going to try pheromone traps this year and see if that helps, they're readily available online. Your trees look like they're doing well too. @hobbyartisan, I envy those of you up north that can grow citrus in that type of climate. I tried to grow a satsuma in a pot in my climate and failed. It didn't even last one season before it shriveled up from lack of water or too much water or who knows what. I commend you on your lime! @Cory I forgot to mention how cool I thought your greenhouse looked in the dark! It's like a spaceship nestled amidst a white snow blanket, too cool. @Mike, how's it going buddy, glad to see you survived the great blizzard of 2016. I hope you see warmer weather soon and get out of that cold weather depression. Thanks for the kind words, I love hanging out in the citrus forum, there hasn't been much activity lately so I've been looking through older posts some 7-8 years old, many of which you wrote or participated in. It's crazy to read back that far and see the progression of yours and everyone's collection through the years. Well I hope everyone has a good night and I'll talk soon. Comments (7)hl, I would not recommend Fire Alarm to anyone in my area. I lost my first one and replaced it but they are very hit and miss. marquest, we too had a mild winter here which is probably why Fire Alarm survived. Most of mine made it through this winter so I am happy with them. Connie, I'm surprised about your Key Lime Pie. That was one of my first Heucheras and I have even successfully divided it once - I find it doesn't always take. But mine always comes back happy and healthy. I hope yours survives! Sherry, do take out that camera! I always love your Heuchera photos! Barb...See MoreBill M.
