Landscape Design Porches & Decks Design Dilemma

deck skirting/lattice

Looking for help with what to do as far as deck skirting. Lattice, wood, etc? We were thinking black vinyl lattice to tie in with the black posts on the deck rail but open to other suggestions. Looking for low maintenance. Deck will be fully stained in CEDAR NATURALTONE color here in the next few weeks.

I might suggest a treatment of horizontal boards (perhaps hardieboard) with an air gap in between each board to allow for ventilation.

@Norwood Architects are you thinking the same color as our siding (which is Everlast in Blue Spruce) or something to offset that?

I believe I follow your situation but, yes, a photo would clear matters for me. If I understand correctly, your posts sit proud (in front of) the deck skirting. Probably the easiest solution is to build framing to fit between each post, then attach the lattice and install. I took a slightly different approach for ours as the construction is different by attaching the framing to the post face whereas you will need to do so from the back. Lattice is not sufficiently sturdy to install without a frame and cutting it can be a challenge too, that's why I built what you see here.

How about solid panels set 6" above the ground? That allows air flow, blocks the sun to minimize plant growth, also allows water runoff paths(rain/splashes), and weed edgers room to work without damaging the structure. Not a fan of wood in contact with the ground, especially plywood. Even railroad ties eventually rot.

In most cases, we would use decking boards if the budget allows, if people looking to save money we would use PT lumber, and the customer will stain/paint it to match decking, etc. Also, lots have to do with the height and the size of the deck, because if people want to use decking @$4-5 per foot it can add up.

Ideally it would be best done in stone to match the rest I think lattice is too busy so if not stone then siding to match the rest .

We don’t have the height like yours but enclosed ours with vertical cedar. It’s stained matching the deck.

I would not do black. It will look like a dark hole.

Here are some examples that would look good on your deck. I would use cedar and finish the same as the deck.

As long as the wood doesn't touch the ground, it should last as long as the deck. I have cedar trellis on either end of my portico for over 20 years and they are just fine.
