Help for my Polka Dot!
Comments (1)Might be too much sun all of a sudden! The leaves turning pale is a giveaway! I think you should slowly acclimatize newly purchased plants to full sun. Even though Greenhouses seem sunny and bright, there IS plastic covering them. I think, outdoors, they prefer morning sun or filtered sun. The chewing is probably slugs. BIG ones...(you DO live in Texas!):-) Also, don't be surprised that your Polka Dots eventually grow to about 10-12" tall. They also send up a spike at the end of summer with itty-bitty blooms on it. PD plants are sprayed with a growth retardant so they look cute and compact when sold. That spray does not last forever!...See MoreSaving a broken polka dot plant?
Comments (3)The main plant will break back (start growing) from the stump and probably be fuller than it ever was. This might be a good time to take a minute to learn about pinching, and try it as your main plant starts growing anew. Interested? Keep in mind that the plant's water demands just took a precipitous drop, so be careful not to damage the root system via over-watering. Check carefully to see if the soil is still damp and wait until it's nearly but not quite dry to the bottom before you water. If you can, post a picture of the top you want to treat as a cutting. You can get some pretty specific advice if we have something to look at. Al...See MoreMy polka dot plant(hypoestes)won’t revive

Comments (10)I agree with Dave on this being a fussy cane begonia. Root rot comes from too much watering as well. I keep mine in the basement and have learned to keep them on the drier side in winter. Mildew is the one issue that can make these types quickly turn ugly. I don't mist my canes but I do water by hose so if some of the leaves get wet, not a huge deal. I have several I've grown from seeds collected off the mother plant that seem identical or slightly different. I wished I had known about watering back when I started getting canes. Here was the mother plant back in Sep, 2009 in the same 18" pot of Encanto Bronze (the bigger cane), Mrs. Hashimoto (the plain green one with white blooms, and Morocco. close up of it, Mrs. Hashimoto and Morocco. Here it was in bloom that year. The seed grown ones last Sep in a slightly smaller pot (maybe 15") and blooming. The plant to the left is Begonia platanifolia (another good sized begonia) This same pot the winter before had mildew so bad that I lost some stems and almost all the leaves before I did anything to remedy the situation. Now if I had a big GH like at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, we could grow them to 12 to 14 feet tall....See MoreGita Kavala
