Alta Southern Magnolia - Size?
Comments (17)Just bought a good size... 6ft. Alta, by mistake. It is very full and lush, huge at six feet. It looked like a very healthy Little Gem. I got home and a nursery tag hidden in the foliage said... Alta Southern Magnolia. Even the nursery thought it was a Little Gem. I wanted the Little Gem because I read it is a faster grower.... anyone know the difference in growing rate, if any? How much growth can I expect in the next couple of years?...See MoreSouthern magnolia(Magnolia Grandiflora) tree leaf question
Comments (20)I've seen lots of DDB, it is a popular landscape tree in the SE. I've only seen one EB, my tree. EB's main claim to fame is it's supposed hardiness. Mine is in full sun and wide open, no large trees anywhere near it. It is about 20-25 years old from a one gallon. It is wider than high, branched to the ground, and fairly open with somewhat long willowy branches. It took a long time to bloom, and is even now a rather shy bloomer. Blooms are of average size. For me EB has been of average hardiness, it has never lost any wood or suffered any bark split, but it has had browned foliage, though never defoliated. On a scale of 1-5 I rate it 3. DDB is very popular and often seen in private landscapes and especially public ones. It is upright in youth and more spreading as it ages, but taller than wide. Foliage is deep glossy green above and copper/red beneath, especially when young. The tree presents a lush, rich appearance and is a vigorous grower. Floriferousness has been average, but blooms are well formed and slightly smaller than average, a good thing IMHO. Hardiness has been on a par with EB for me, the literature says less hardy than other hardy clones, zone 7. On a scale of 1-5 I rate it 5. All magnolias grown under conditions you describe will tend to be open, with slightly larger than average foliage and less than average bloom, all due to shade. If DDB and EB are the only clones under consideration, my choice would be DDB....See MoreSouthern Magnolia Brackens Brown Beauty- strange color back of leaf
Comments (30)Blue Bayou and HU-525254581 and Embothrium, Wow, Thanks for all of your personal experience on the magnolias and helping me ID the Magnolia I grew from a twig! Getting personal gardening experience from all of you is great info and I learned a lot from all of you. And the cat knows everything, but he's not talk'n! Also the people at https://myperfectplants.com have been totally professional, and agree with all of you that the mail order magnolia did appear to be Little Gem and they are sending me a replacement tree. I was truly impressed with how nice they have been and how quickly they responded. I am a very satisfied customer and would recommend them highly to anyone wanting to buy from them. I'm going to give the poor Little Gem the best chance at life in zone 6b in Pittsburgh that I can and will be looking for a little microclimate in my yard, like HU-525254581 did. And blue bayou I saw how big the parent tree of my rooted twig was and I did give it room to grow! Glad to know I will have a big tree in ten years, I'm not so young anymore, and it has indeed been a fast grower!...See MorePruning Leggy Southern Magnolia
Comments (13)A southern magnolia in zone 6a is never going to look like a southern magnolia in Alabama. They grow leggy here. Do not prune. It won't encourage a more compact tree. Fewer leaves will diminish its ability to generate fuel for growth. Give it TLC and hope for a look you can live with after two more years. from plants.usda.gov: Southern magnolia primarily grows in the southeastern US and the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain in USDA Hardiness Zone 6–10 (Dirr, 1998). Southern magnolia is native from Maryland south to Florida and west to Texas. Cold-hardy cultivars can be grown as far north as southern Ohio, northern New Jersey, and Long Island. Missouri Botanical Garden, a very reliable source for all things plant, has it listed as zone 7-9 here: http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=c117. I think that's more honest. I choose plants and trees that list zone 5 even though I'm supposedly living in 6a....See MoreJason, zone 7A, near Greensboro NC
