what trees bear fruit in coastal so cal?
Comments (2)Here on the coast, the question is: WHAT WON'T GROW AND FRUIT here? look around and you'll probably see commercial crops, orchards and vinyards of all types. There are vinyards in Paso Robles where it gets 120 and freezes, Strawberries in Santa Maria, lemons, oranges, apples, almonds, berries of all nature etc. In my yard--and subject to little maintainance are grapes, apples, plums, peaches, aprocots, tangellos, and guava. Across the street are acres of avocados. All I can think of that might be a restriction would you living in the desert but I think most grow there also, think of the crops that come out of Mexico! cheers; Michael...See MoreWhy my new fig tree has fruit already & old one does not?
Comments (5)Nurseries tend to be better at keeping the plants happy (its their full-time job after all) and so your new plant was very happy there so is showing its happiness in delayed fashion - those figs were set as the tree went dormant. In my main planting my youngest fig is now setting the biggest breba crop I have ever seen. Scott...See MoreFig tree not bearing fruit

Comments (5)Assuming that it is a common fig, and a variety that will ripen figs in your climate....yes. Search this forum and especially the Figs 4 Fun Forum for some instructions on how to prune a fig tree for better production. Threads by "ascpete" will show diagrams. A 50+ year old fig tree that might have been neglected, can certainly be made to bear figs, and can be pruned back and be trained to produce figs that can be picked without using a ladder. It may take a few years to get that tree under control, but it can be done easily. Good luck. Post some photos if you can. Frank...See Moregarybeaumont_gw
