I understand Casey's point to be that to manhandle a window, you have to be able to stand right at the wall. If you are leaning across the width of the counter, you can't get the leverage, and/or your back takes a hit. But overall, what a useful thread this is for me; we have a similar window to Casey's - too low to make countertop even with the sill, requiring a well behind or making the window smaller. So thank you for posting! Plus, like Ashley, we have too little space to one side for what we need to put there, namely a fridge. So the fridge sticks out like the sore thumb it is. Love the idea of a set of under-counter appliances - our only idea so far has been to reduce the size of the window. This is not going to be a bad thing as the original window is not there any more anyway, but a horrid aluminum thing that we want to replace anyway. But the thought of losing the light has been killing me... except in summer, when the heat from the window is killing me. Anyway, all that to say, you can get European fridges that are quite narrow - 24 inches or so. Naturally they have correspondingly less capacity, but for certain people this would work. And Igloo, I love your idea of the glass back/front cabinet. I've thought of shelves across the window but not of making it a cabinet, but keeping the heat out in summer will be an interesting challenge, not to mention privacy. But definitely worth considering. KarinL

I do have this photo. It shows the Lanai/ Juliet Porch and the unfinished exterior of the addition. Above the garage door is the french doors leading to the Lanai (left) from the Master bedroom. The unfinished addition is now bricked the same as the house, and the two dormers are stucco-ed and painted brown. We will add limestone detailing in the peaks of the dormers as shown in one of the dormers on the front of the house, as well as trimboards around the window and doorway. That is a future project though.... =) I can add a current photo, however, the tree is fully leafed out now so there really is not much viewing of the Lanai/ Juliet Porch. But do let me know if that would help. Three D: sorry for my confusing post. This will probably make more sense to you now! Yes, we have a permit out for all of this work, but a neighbor called to complain that our lanai/ juliet porch did not have a railing so the city is wanting us to install one immediately even though no one obviously uses it with no railing. Kind of a CYA request on their part and when the city makes a request, well...we do it =) More info: we will need to have certain specifications for height and also no more than 4" between slats/ ballisters. I am most interested in any opinions of what styling we should look for to coordinate with the Tudor styling. Obviously, traditional tudors do not have porches so I have little to go on for ideas of what would look nice. Hubby prefers all metal; I have no idea what I would like other than something more ornate than just a plain deck railing. Thanks for any help! did your home have stone or brick at one time, I wonder? The Gaines did a remodel on a Tudor in one of their later episodes. had a covered front porch patio like you have. this is the after shot. I love those. have never seen a tudor w/a white picket fence. wrought iron, or stone fence would be more appropriate. I love these homes. my husband and I almost got a 1928 tudor in Ontario a few years back. was going to restore it and flip. I don't know if yours is out in that area, but drive around the historical streets and get ideas for how the homes are done. Normally they are all done to w/period details. Pasadena, San Marino, Anaheim,,,they all have the historical areas as well. some ideas. most Tudor exteriors lean on the dark side. tans, browns, forest greens, dark blue/greens, etc,,,you don't see many white or cream tudors w/blue trim! So, it's up to you in what direction you want to take it. maybe check w/your city's historical society and see what combos they have that were authentic.

Really nice tiles! My gas insert is rectangular in a fireplace with an arched opening. They cut a piece of metal to fill in rest of the area and painted it with black paint. I had to crawl into the fireplace to help draw the template so that it fit the opening perfectly. It is set back about an inch from the front of the opening. It just sort of sits there, isn’t attached to anything.
