A California split is where the front door opens into the living room. There are then two sets of stairs to go to the basement or up to the kicthen/dining/beds/baths. Our master is another couple of stairs up from that. There is also a sub-basement. It's about 2400 sqft with a walkout basement and a screened in deck. This is the biggest house we've owned, and I will post about the living room and master bedroom because they have vaulted ceilings which are throwing me for a loop. I appreciate everyone's help, and I will try to photoshop some of these options.

can you DIY? if you want updated, then that 90's oak should go,,,or be painted. But I mentioned the DIY part because if you could get those MDF baseboards, (if you buy them wholesale and cut out the middleman, the cost is .36 a foot!) and install them after you do your flooring. putting new flooring down against the old ones will mean a quarter round piece installed to hide the cuts against the baseboards. I personally hate the look and if it can be avoided, it looks so much better. Plus, you will have to thoroughly clean and scuff-sand those existing ones, prime and paint. to me, it's more work. Check w/your flooring guys. depending on what and where you buy your new flooring, they will also include baseboard installation for you for a few extra hundred. then you can paint those yourself. totally worth it. just make sure to get the taller baseboards. you'll also have to do the door molding, but it's not a huge deal. you can have them do that as well for a bit extra. Don't know what else you need,,,

lol, admitting you have an instagram problem is the first step. All kidding aside, a house with a pleasing exterior and architecture that doesn't scream "latest style" is a gift. Eventually, all the craftsman adjacent houses and farm adjacent houses are going to fall out of favor with the Instagram crowd. Or whatever thing dictates style to the masses in a few years. You can follow trends on your exterior with easily changed things like door color or a magnolia wreath or whatever.

I hope other people chime in. I’m definitely not an expert, but I thought French country when looking at your house. Maybe search for some inspiration? I like the brick, but I think your home would also look great with a lime wash or German smear (it may go by another name too). I think the shutters could be a paler blue or pale green. I don’t have ideas for the front door and sidelights, but maybe having an overall inspiration will guide you. Also, I think landscaping would do a lot here (more than changing the brick).
