Looking for owners of large, do-it-yourself GH's....
Comments (5)I have 2 wood frame greenhouses. The smallest one is 14' x 18' and the larger one is 23' x 26'. I also have two 16' x 96' hoop houses. The roof and lower sides are covered with corrigated fiberglass. They both have storm windows covering the entire center of the sidewalls. I use an attic type fan with a thermostat and louvers to ventilate. I usually wrap the outside in 6 mil plastic during the winter and the fan turns on automatically if the temp gets to high. They are heated with 30,000 BTU ventless propane heaters. We recently moved to a new location and I definately will be using the double wall polycarbonate to cover the roof and sidewalls on the new greenhouses. I still plan to have windows that open. I have seen advertisements for a double wall polycarbonate which comes in rolls that can be used on hoop houses etc. I plan to check this product out for covering the tops of the hoophouses. There are images of all of the buildings on my web site (Link Below)under the Greenhouse menu. The larger one has a design flaw - the roof is to flat and condensation drips from the roof about half way down instead of flowing to the sidewall gutter. Comments (4)merdena, yes! I say this from my own experience. In other words, 'if I could do it, anyone can.' I had two advantages. I worked in a hardware store and I did 18 hours of "irrigation school". The most important thing I learned in school was to identify and name correctly the many and various fittings. My first investment was in a can each of cleaner and glue, some pipe and fittings and a hacksaw. My first successful project was extending the water supply to our washing machine. It had to be removable to leave the original fixture intact when we left the apartment. PVC is a particular joy to work with because if you make a mistake, you can use the hacksaw to get back to the drawing board. I practised aligning fittings (without glue) to make piping go where I wanted. Then I would glue the project, test it and cover it up. Two habits I formed were to always use colored glue so that I could spot a joint that was not glued and to always use teflon tape on threaded fittings. Hardware stores have these free booklets which will walk you through the project from beginning to end. You yurself will not be able to resist getting into the act; there are so many spinoffs! Like making PVC furniture, plant supports, lightweight shelving and (clothing) racks etc. etc....See MoreWhere do you buy Miele DW Salts & what detergent do you use?
Comments (14)The tabs really do a great job (there are some older threads with loads of posts singing their praises!). We used Cascade Complete initially, but Miele came out with the tabs sometime around when we first started using our DW. A bunch of GW'ers tried them and kept raving about them so we decided to give them a try. The CC worked perfectly fine and everything came out spotless. However, the tabs seem to give the loads an extra level of clean and sparkle. Also, the air in the DW just had a fresher quality (odor) after running a load with the tab vs CC. The DW after a CC cleaned load isn't bad, just less fresh smelling. FWIW, some on this forum use 1/2 a tab (and possibly even 1/4 tab?) to clean most loads. Again, my stuff comes out fine with a 1/2 tab, but a full tab just seems to raise that sparkle and clean to another level. It's not overly noticeable, in fact, I thought it was my mind playing tricks on me, but some others here have said the same thing. We don't usually run our DW every day, so I like the sense of security (that everything will get clean) that using a full tab gives. Last night I had a pretty empty DW, but one of those few items was a stinky plastic food container that would have been quite foul smelling by morning let alone this evening, so I ran the DW before bed instead of waiting, with a 1/2 tab and everything came out great. PS there were some posters who had trouble with grit (undisolved soap powder) build up in their rack glides from using Ecover so you might want to do a search for those threads discussing that....See Morecentral vacuum do-it-yourself
Comments (1)having just gone through this I can help you out here. Regular pvc is slightly larger so the fittings on the central vac hookups wont fit. That said there is a fix. I found a place that sells adapters to transition regular PVC to central vac pipe - Central vacuum stores they are online just google them. They also sell an inlet that hooks directly to PVC. Another well priced source for central vac parts is northside service company in danville ca. they have a webstore and an ebay storefront. I found the people at both places to be knowledgible and helpful....See MoreTina Marie
