Comments (16)new_frmr-"The property I'm looking at IS way out there; Greene county, NC. Is it too far for anyone to consider actually joining us? Is the idea too cost prohibitive to attain - ie, red tape to get rezoned, etc? Does this area of NC just possibly have no use for modern day, ex-traders turned hippies?" If you aren't from North Carolina (or the South) then you might want to do a little more investigating before you decide to move there. The countryside is beautiful but jobs are tough to find unless you have a particular skill (nursing, etc). I have family outside of Asheville. It took them years to integrate. 20 years later, they have good friends and neighbors, but it took alot of work to fit in. Several years ago I picked up a book called "How To Find Your Ideal Country Home". EXCELLENT book that describes what pitfalls to avoid when choosing what and where you want to settle. The author also has a website/forum. You might get some ideas there. Here is a letter to the author describing what overly bossy outsiders can expect. "Hi, Bumpy Gene, I'm from North Carolina, Greenville, to be exact, and we are overrun with Yankees! It's hard to find anybody with a southern drawl anymore. They have brought all of their big-city problems with them--crime, gangs, traffic gridlock, and a holier-than-thou attitude. I thank God for hot, steamy summers, lots of bugs, snakes, and so forth. I like to see 'em squirm (the Yankees that is!). Even after a major flood here last year they are still moving here by the hundreds every week. Nothing will deter them. It's colonialism--the natives suffer when the population influx begins. We are all in the "service economy" down here. Low-paying jobs to provide services for the rich SUV crowd. Thank God we just moved onto some family land which is in a trust (it can't be sold to make a subdivision for those outsiders). 100 acres and not a Yankee in sight! Yee-hah! Keep up the good work and take care. Sincerely, Sharon H. You Yankees might want to either steer clear of North Carolina or practice your drawl before you move down to Sharon's neck of the woods. She has friends." Go in with your eyes open! I like visiting N.C., but I don't think I'd want to live there. I've listed some websites you might find helpful. Good luck! Comments (31)Today I spent the day looking at real estate..for quite awhile now I've been researching the southern US for my retirement spot..I like NC and SC both..looked for houses in lots of cities in both states..when we stayed in Aiken we went to Augusta for lunches and dinners several times..I looked at Asheville and Black Mountain houses today..some had wonderful views..we lived in Napa CA once and I had a friend that lived in Lake Berryessa..half an hour drive up a curvy winding road..the drive made me sick..some homes in Asheville wouldn't work for me..and the growing season is shorter than I want..but it's appealing and I would love to visit..I keep going back to the Charleston area..it would be so exciting to have my own palm tree.....See MoreIs North Carolina considered The South?
Comments (16)Thank you everyone who answered! A kittle background: My father's family came from France in the 1800's thru Canada, crossed the border to The US and settled in Buffalo. Raised in Western NY, known for its' terrible winters.I remember once school closed for a whole week to get the streets plowed, then the big snow storm of 1977, the October Surprise storm which dropped so much snow so fast on trees that still had leaves and thousands of trees fell and closed many roads, then a few years ago nine feet of snow. My sister's husband was just sick of their winters, hated the snow, the cold and all the shoveling. Their son married and moved to Marshall NC, they visited and liked it so much they decided to buy a home near him after they both retired, and this year it all came true. I do apprecite the wisdom and anecdotes, I am just glad you think my gift is appropriate for a new- Southerner. My sister is a great cook, and loves gardening, so I am sure she will enjoy the magazine. Thanks, everyone, thanks ya'all....See MoreSouth Carolina real estate question
Comments (20)As others have said, I think the term 3/4 bath is obsolete or fast getting there. My theory is that's primarily because bathing patterns have changed and many (most?) people now consider a shower the full equivalent of a bathtub. Then too, showers can be pretty tricked out now and a luxurious spa type shower certainly is a full bathing experience. Anecdotally I've taken a bath literally twice in the past 4 decades, shower person all the way. I don't think my husband has used a bathtub once in the 38 years we've been together. We are remodeling both bathrooms and the only reason I'm leaving a tub in one is the resale factor. Well that and maybe our upcoming grandchild might use it some day ;)....See MoreTina Marie
