You get what, where, when, and why. GC gets how and who.

You need a qualified tile person, not another trades person who think they can do it. Does your cabinet person have the experience, training and tools to install tile? Is your GC in the loop?

I know a roofer who installs cabinets in the winter and a landscaper who does pavers in the summer and tiles in the winter.

Would like to see the foreseeable outcomes on some of their jobs? :-)

Let the GC do his part and the cabinet maker do his... Unless you want to end up with an exact scenario as Joseph Corlett, LLC mentioned "where, when, and why... and how and who" plus "he did this or he didn't do that, he shouldn't have, wouldn't have and this was his job, etc and you get the point"

Disaster on all fronts to not be using a licensed electrician or plumber. A part time ”tile guy” who is clueless about waterproofing would just be the cherry on top. Your cabinet guy and GC are both suspect.

Did your GC say he wants to do the tiling himself or, he wants to hire the person to do the tiling himself rather than you hiring the cabinetry guy to do your tiling? Ditto the utilities & structural - is the GC actually performing the work or is he hiring licensed & skilled people for that work? I’m asking because after reading all replies, it’s clear that ypur post can be interpreted two different ways.

So as a clarification, our GC is hiring out all sub contractors.

We only found a custom Cabinet guy because our GC does have cabinetry I like. I think our custom cabinetry guy is A GC trying to expand that specializes in custom cabinetry and can do whole kitchens and baths.

Are sny of these people actually licensed and insured? You checked the online state database and called their insurance company to verify.

Ok so you do have the usual setup. I agree with what the Pros & others here have said. Let the GC do his job & hire the tile setter. You must remember why you hired a GC in first place rather than doing the hiring, scheduling, permitting etc yourself. I was thrilled to have a GC when an issue came up during our project & I didn’t want the same person to do the remainder of that part of project. I wasn’t the one who had to fire the person & hire a new person. I was able to speak quite frankly to GC about my concerns. Any issues with work, result, etc that came up during or after project were resolved by GC. If our hire couldn’t do the work when scheduled, any resulting delays were also on us. Established GC’s generally have a pool of skilled people they have built relationships with - they know those folks are reliable & they know the quality of their work. Another strong reason to hire a GC for projects requiring several different types of skills

I had custom cabinets done for my remodel - kitchen, baths, office/den. I had a separate contract for the design, construction and installation of these with the cabinet maker. He was someone my GC was familiar with and so there were no issues in terms of coordinating - if there were I didn't hear about them as they worked anything out on their own. My designer designed the style and configuration of the cabinets and was the "professional" who oversaw them.

However cabinets are to a great extent a discrete element just like a floor might be a discrete construction element. A tile shower cannot be "divided" in terms of the responsibility and you would want the GC to take full responsibiity for the trades people who do it because if there are any issues and you have hired separate tradespeople people will pass the buck as to why there are issues or attempt to whereas if there are problems and you have had the job done by one person and his chosen subcontractors the GC is responsible for ensuring that any problems are solved.
