I don't know if this has been posted before but it made me lol. I found it on Reddit. The comment to the post is hilarious!

Uhm, this is actually pretty smart. Have you ever had 2 people trying to use the same sink? I'd be thrilled to have this.

I've never seen one like that. But....would I copy it....no. I do like having two sinks in my kitchen. I also have a built-in microwave, it frees up counter space....I like that. ❤️

I have visited a house where the whole kitchen was like that. It made for a lot of counterspace but awkward to look at and to use as a visitor. I think the homeowner designed it. It’s beautiful (the materials and finishes) but very idiosynchratic.

In this one, is the open dishwasher in the way of someone scraping dishes at the sink?

Posting as much as you can of the "whole" picture of the plan and your intended use tends to narrow down responses to a more consistently useful range. For all we know, that chevron counter might echo a theme being used elsewhere. If it doesn't and you love it, maybe a theme could be developed. On a house we almost built, I "clipped"a couple of interior wall corners to create angles that would echo a necessarily angled entry walk. On paper, the interior looked a bit like the house was drunk-staggering across the slope to end at the living room, and I know what I would have gotten if I'd posted just part of it on the home building forum without explanation. Note that there was a reason for this and no odd angle was there by itself. They were all intended to combine into a cohesive overall look that, in our case, conformed to the site.

The range is going to be a Viking 48Ã¢ÂÂ, but we are not set on the other appliances. Since we will be spending a lot on the range, we were going to get Ã¢ÂÂnormalÃ¢ÂÂ quality for the other appliances. We looked at home depot at refrigerators, and the one we liked the best was a Samsung side-by-side. Kksmama- do you mean move the pantry to the left side of the fridge? The height from floor to ceiling is 9Ã¢ÂÂ2Ã¢ÂÂ (give or take fractions depending on flooring we choose) This design is for 30Ã¢ÂÂ deep countertops, 15Ã¢ÂÂ deep uppers (except for the above fridge/pantry cabinets- those are 30Ã¢ÂÂ)- thanks to this forum for giving me those ideas! 36Ã¢ÂÂ from floor to countertop 20Ã¢ÂÂ from countertop to bottom of uppers 40Ã¢ÂÂ upper cabinets 11 ÃÂ¾Ã¢ÂÂ upper upper cabinets- increase these and decrease uppers for better looks? 2 ÃÂ½Ã¢ÂÂ upper molding Left of range 28.5Ã¢ÂÂ - right of range 46.5Ã¢ÂÂ to wall. The pantry area is 36Ã¢ÂÂfridge- 6Ã¢ÂÂ cup pullout- 36Ã¢ÂÂ pantry We also will have a closet pantry on the far right side of the entryway for lesser used items. Those are good suggestions for the microwave and prep sink. I am not happy with the unsymmetrical cabinets on either side of the sink but couldnÃ¢ÂÂt think of a better spot for the microwave. We use the microwave a lot to defrost and melt food items that we use in cooking/baking, IÃ¢ÂÂm worried if I put it on the right of the fridge it is too far away from the prep zone. Right now we were thinking of putting a pullout trash in the island (closest to the range), but pulling out towards sink. Is that a good spot? It is right in the middle of the prep zone. The only fixed item in the kitchen is the window (we built w/ ICF), making it very hard to put another window in. Moving the range would be hard but not impossible since we already ran the gas lines. The left wall is an interior wall. I will make a floor plan and try to post tonight or tomorrow w/ all measurements! Thank you for all the suggestions so far! sena01 - I totally agree with you on getting rid of the door from the mudroom to the kitchen and just making it a path. Btw the pantry 'doors' will probably be arches with drapes pulled back. I have a refined-tuscan theme. (If there is such a thing:) Thank you also szruns. I spent a lot of time last night mulling over your thoughts too. I am definitely leaning toward a prep sink at the end of the island, and your other ideas have made me rethink many other things too. Ok here's what I'm actually thinking -I know, I know, I'm supposed to be working on the musical...but here goesÃ¢ÂÂ¦! Keep the design basically the same. Move the wall ovens to the right of the baking centre(desk). Put a dishwasher at the end of the island across from the baking center to handle prep and pantry dishes, a prep sink next to that, still in front of the baking centre. Then I still have 4' of 'stone' for me and my kids/husband to prep on - uninterrupted by dishwasher (marcolo). Put the main sink (increase to 36") at the other end of the island - across from the cooktop. Add 12" to the counter to the left of the cooktop. Put the 2nd dishwasher at the left end of the cooktop counter next to the dining room to mainly handle dining room/cooking dishes. Cutlery drawer tupperware drawers under it between 2nd dishwasher and cooktop. I would also love a trash cabinet on the corner of the island in front of the fridge and the cooktop that could roll out both ways - towards cooktop and towards fridge. That is a dream- don't know if it's even possible. I will put a recycle centre in the pantry. This doesn't solve my 'traffic' issues. But I am thinking I don't mind having the kitchen that accessible - as long as it's safe. I also think a lot of the mudroom traffic will come through the pantry which is first and has the snacks, microwave and funstuff in it. I think this gives me a clearer focus and functionality with two zones: one cooking/cleanup the other prep, baking - both with ice/water/stone/fire. I know this might seem crazy; but I believe I've mostly obeyed the rules, and I think I like it! I still need to think through what goes in every cupboard but I I'm getting closer much thanks to all your help. I understand there are differences in all the pics I've posted i.e. where appliances and sinks are - but if you're still with me the basic layout is consistent. I attached a pic of the pantry plans - I am really excited about it- minus the dishwasher remember. Thanks for making me think - even though I've been very rebellious;) Cidelle

Completely understand all of that, having the dishwasher behind us would work in the same way as it would be very close when the door is open but the only other option is to put the dishwasher next to the sink and then have to move the range to the only other wall that you could use for it which is the back wall next to the fridge. I guess we could move it to the right of the sink but it would be just as far away or more than in the island What nobody is asking or knows is our preferences like I don't want my back to everybody in the kitchen while I'm cooking, so having the range in the middle of the kitchen makes it easier for me to see what's going on in the living area to my left, talk to my wife or kids when they are prepping things in the sink and talk to the people at the island easier. Does any of that make sense as to why the layout is that way?

I have seen this a number of times in 1950s early 1960s larger kitchen designs (because this would have been a large kitchen in the 1950s-60s), including some high end kitchens like St. Charles cabinetry.

The DW is in the wrong location by current standards in each picture. It seems to be between the sink and cooktop in each case, In the bottom picture it seems like the sink closest to is the prep sink but really it should be the DW sink and the sink in the middle should be the prep sink.

OMG @palimpsest I had no idea this was ever a thing. It does seem to be a practical design when two people need to use the same sink, and for countertop space. The dishwasher placement seems off in that first photo. This design, however, would be a hard no for me.

The historical reference is great, thanks palimpsest. The photos highlight a big different, the modern rendition is a sink, the older ones are counterspace. I would think the lack of open counterspace to both sides would be a functional hassle, with a lack of staging space -- one side dirty, one side (large item) clean.

I'm so happy you stopped by to say hello! As you know, I took a break from Houzz but I'm slowly getting back into the flow of things. What surprises me is how drastically the number of posts has reduced, not just on the conversations side but in all the fourms. Am I just imagining things? It seems that a year or two ago there was double or triple the number of new posts per day. Did I miss something?

Pal tks for the kitchen design history

It's not something I would ever do or want, but what I object to most is the sink in that position messes up the landing/staging area for any dirty dishes.

Not for me. i was just out for a walk with a friend and he was commenting about how he liked this house with an oddly angled front window. I had to admit that i just couldnt live with it. I like right angles and symmetry. If i walk into someones house and their sofa is on an angle, i start to twitch.

@daisychain Zn3b. I don't generally like angled sofas either, I would much prefer a circular sofa than one on an angle. I like things a little off-balance, just not sofas. And definitely not this kitchen. You and I are opposites I guess in some respects. Too much symmetry makes me want to hold my head at a tilt to try and trick my brain into thinking it isn't there. LOL
