Built-In Wardrobe- ADA Compliance

hello! i purchased an NYC co-op that im making renovations to. the buildings architect noted that the built in wardrobe i wanted to put in is too close to the opening of the door and needs to be 18 inches away to be ADA compliant. is this something i have to actually stick to? its a pre-war building, and the building itself is not ADA compliant, nor is my actual apartment. Has anyone had a similar situation? i already designed the unit with my contractor, and giving up a foot and a half is going to make the closet too small for what i actually need (and it doesnt really make sense to put on the other walls for me).

picture below is the room currently. the built in would go where the wood wardrobe is currently

thanks!
