Height of pub table behind sofa

I want to put a pub table behind my sofa to gain extra seating and an eating space while watching TV. They are popular and available, but they’re all around 36” tall or taller. It will be taller than my 30” high sofa. How are so many using these behind sofas when it is recommended that a console table behind a sofa not exceed the height of the sofa? Looking for help to solve this dilemma. I can find 30” console tables, but they’re not conducive to sitting and eating. Thanks

Then uyou look for a console table many are 30" high like an actual table so no stools unless adjustable from 18 -24" and then anyone sitting on the sofa will block some of your view of the TV IMO get some folding chairs bring them out when you need them .

Seems like either you need to buy a taller sofa with 36"+ back or you'll have to do the shorter console table and put regular height chairs rather than counter height stools. I'm currently in the market for sectionals and there definitely are some that are 36-42" high.

I don't have a pub table, but I did notice that the table you're looking at comes in two heights: 35 3/8" and 41 3/8". To me, 35" is fine -- that's counter height. But the width is a little small to me. I guess you'd have to fill plates at the stove or counter. Probably not a great table for spread-out homework. But I'd be tempted to try it. Some of the Ikea stools come in the right height for that lower size bar table. Did you see the Bjursta tables they have? They have two pullout leaves -- one table is 35" x 19" and opens to 35" x 35". Comes in 3 finishes. I saw it in 29" table height, but they might have others.

The rule I have heard, and which I like, is that the person sitting in the chair/sofa etc should not be able to see the light bulb. In practice, I like that rule because it avoids the direct glare from the bulb. Can you experiment on height with some lamps you already have?

Maybe pull that sofa out from the window wall a bit and make a continuous walkway in front of the windows and all around the sofa that includes that small area. Why fill it up with anything? Let it be. Maybe move the dogs bed into that corner and out of the walk space that it appears to be in now. That is a surprisingly small room to be graced with such large windows.

Just because the rules say that tables behind a soft should not be higher than the back, doesn't mean that this "rule" can't be broken if the situation demands this. I can eve imagine that this could be quite attractive. However:

Please give us a detailed floor plan of the area in question, how many you want to be able to watch TV and how many of these prefer sitting or reclining. Then maybe we can come up with a plan for you.
